This debate is about Harper, not the others. He's the only candidate with anything to lose, since he's currently polling in majority territory.
However, he didn't need to win; he only needed to not lose too badly. He looked awkward, uninspired and occasionally panicked--but he didn't look dramatically worse than anyone else, and odds are that's good enough.
He's a bad leader, but he's probably going to win a majority. If he can't win a majority now, then it's time for a new leader.
I had never talked to anyone from Quebec about the Bloc before, so tonight I decided to have that conversation with a friend from Montreal.
She said that Quebec is not a part of the Constitution (which I seem to remember from a high school class) and as such the residents of Quebec are not granted the same rights and freedoms as the rest of Canada. She told me that most Quebecers' objective in voting for the Bloc is to try and get these same protections in lieu of not being part of th constitution. She mentioned that there is no desire by many to separate from Canada, and that she will stop voting for the Bloc once Quebec is recognized by the Constitution.
I'm not sure I agree with this, but I thought itwould be wise to get an opinion of the Bloc from a Quebecer's perspective before making a judgement...
Your friend is misinformed and wrong.
When the Constitution was repatriated in 1982, it's true that the province of Quebec did not sign the new agreement, but it passed anyway because of support from the federal government the other provinces. Despite their province not endorsing it, though, citizens of Quebec are still granted 100% of the freedoms and protections given to all Canadians.

To me the losers tonight are the citizens of Canada. If those four are the best this country can do in producing someone to lead the country, well, that's just sad.
Harper: Drab, with the personality of a fence post
Ignatieff: Scatterbrained and much less than advertised, this guy was a professor at Harvard, really?
Layton: Well dressed guy with short man syndrome, and a mustache.
Duceppe: Equivalent of a rambling town drunkard.

So is it Bloc propaganda still circulating throughout Quebec? Well if thats the only issue she had than she should have no problem voting for someone other than the Bloc.
I really wished someone in the debate showed some real passion. It was far too civilized.

Yeah a Harper minority govt should oust 3 of them. Duceppe will still be around.

Thank God the majority of Canadians will never vote for him. He's fine for the opposition - he'll keep the party in power in line, but him and his policies would be a disaster for this Country, if he ever won an election.

Jack Layton looks just like the Video Professor. Anyone ever see his commercials for learning Windows and Office? I am convinced they are the same person.

To me the most telling part was the ending handshake
Harper and Layton shook hands, Layton had a grin, Harper said good job.
Layton and Ignatieff barely made eye contact during the handshake.
Harper and Ignatieff looked like they wanted to throw fists.
Duceppe was relaxed in the handshake.
You can tell that Layton and duceppe know this is a game.
Ignatieff isn't to that point yet, especially with his attack on Layton, it was a great shot, but the wrong forum.
Harper is what he is, he's not a personality type A he's a bureaucrat. But I think his performance was better this year then last year, and I don't think that there was any major damage done.
Ignatieff needs to be way stronger tomorrow night, his performance wasn't bad, but it wasn't a vote booster, and he looked more like Angry leader the Harper ever has.
TBQH I was expecting more, especially with Ignatieff's pedigree.

The leaders have 24 hours to make major adjustments for the french language debate tomorrow, I would expect that Harper will stay on point. Duceppe will be more comfortable in French (I thought his closing remarks were so awful tonight), Ignatieff might be a bit more comfortable and even now that he's through the first one. Layton will be Layton, though I hope he pushes more on Ignatieff tomorrow night and especially his attendance record.

I didn't see anything about pummeling in that article.
Quote:
Harper, who was on the defensive for most of the debate but did not appear to suffer serious damage, said the opposition had provoked what he called an unnecessary election at a time when Canadians should be focusing on the economy.
