OK, go find all the deals where a similar player was traded for a top prospect during the season.

I couldn't stand the waiting so I went to see the movie Argyle. Gotta admit that the laughs in the movie helped prepare me for the returns we got. The returns wasn't what I had hoped for given all the hype. That said picks are not bad and gives us some flexibility should they decide to make a trade or 2 in the off season. In Conroy I trust
Also enjoyed all the gifs and speculation that went on these past few days. Made the whole waiting process much more enjoyable.
Also a big thanks to Sec214 for keeping us engaged and guessing with all his gifs.

Maybe teams just aren’t that high on Hanifin . He stunk in the playoffs vs the Oilers
You can easily argue he’s the Flames 4th best / most important D - and we aren’t exactly a powerhouse
He can slot in nice as a protected 3/4 D on a contender . He will help Vegas . But agent stuff aside I’m not sure he a a guy as targeted for the playoffs as people think / hope

Vegas better get their butts in gear and get a divisional spot...rooting against the Oilers with a Flames 2nd rounder on the line seems fun

Still perplexed why there isn't a prospect in this.

He had before the draft. The draft. During the season. At the deadline.
You can slice or dice it however you want, this this is a very underwhelming return for a player of Hanifins age, quality , and salary.

And how many such trades were made during all that time?

Didn’t Steinberg and others warn us that the return would be underwhelming?

The same Giroux who is 72nd in all-time NHL point leaders?
People here forget that for most of his tenure, Hanifin was a solid top 4 dman. Not a star or even top pairing.

I kind of agree. Maybe this year is different, but he seems to get worse the more meaningful the game

The return is fine. Even better if we get that 2026 unprotected 1st

That's the only blue chip prospect moved in the last 5 years.
And he was 5 years post draft and hadn't really lived up to the hype at that point (even though he's turned it around a bit in Philly)
It would be the equivalent of trading for Peyton Krebs or Alex Turcotte right now IMO. Which I doubt anybody would have been super excited about and calling him a blue chip prospect if the return was 1st + Turcotte.
If LA gets offered a 2nd for Turcotte this offseason I bet they'd think about it as I think he will require waivers next year.

Sure - so let's see how he does in his second year as GM. Does he take any learnings away from this.

Tippet was the Miromanov in that deal. He was a toss in that popped.

As far as the throw in player?
Remember when Sharangovich was a bench warmer in the playoffs? Ya good times.

I have stressed that the strength of this organization is their drafting and development. They are leveraging that nicely. I would have liked to see a bit more come back in this trade, but overall, this is a huge injection of assets, and the cupboards weren't bare to begin with.
Who knows? Maybe they get some lotto luck in 2026 and end up with McKenna? At any rate, Calgary continues finding players throughout the draft. They have hit on high-end players outside of the first two rounds as well. Calgary will be drafting their new core.
As well, the next couple of NCAA free agents will probably be looking at signing here as they will have an easier path to the NHL, including promising them games and burning a year off their ELCs.
Another area that Calgary can suddenly find itself profiting from is from the KHL. Maybe they get to sign the next Panarin. With suddenly have a contingent of Russian and Belarusian players in the organization, maybe this can be a landing spot of sorts for some UFAs from there?
At the end of the day, this team didn't have the horses to compete. Now they can go draft their horses. The draft will be exciting, as well as following all of these prospects and watching them grow.
The most important thing that they have done is leverage what they are best at, and that's drafting and development.

All true.
Hoping the Vegas pick turns into a really good one is like hoping you win $500k in a lottery (I know you're going to say the pick being good is more likely than winning the lottery so I'll reduce the winning amount in my analogy).
Hoping Miromanov turns into a player is like hoping Matthew Phillips turning into a player.
I know you like to take risks and what ifs are exciting, but you're really putting money on the far more unlikely outcome, and most times do you that, you lose.
Everyone wants to play for Vegas. They attract many FAs and are always in on the biggest names in trade. I doubt they will bottom out.
I'll give you the 2nd. At this point, I consider that a given they win against the Oilers (at least I hope). 2026 1st, 2025 2nd and Miromanov for Hanifin is the most likely return. It's still not good.
