Andersson is 5 years older but easier to fit under the cap next year and brings more of a two-way game and has some bite.

For me personally I just want the Flames to move Andersson for a futures based package and I want very little adds made in the offseason. I think a lot went right last year and the team was vibing all year. When a player like McKenna is available in the next draft and a new rink is still 2 years out I really want the flames to slow play next year.
I've been advocating for this for 2 years now, so sure. But everyone here seems convinced that there's no chance management will do that. If they are going to fool themselves into trying to compete, IMO moves like this achieve multiple goals:

1. Byram plays LD, which we need more than RD today.
2. Byram is 5 years younger than Andersson and also has longer to potentially control
3. Byram has much more potential upside than Andersson (we know what Andersson is today.)

While also not giving up the draft capital we need to maintain to try to get better through the draft. Which IMO is pretty pointless when we're aiming to draft ~15th every year.

What if SJ also send Filip Bystedt to CGY as part of the 3 way deal?
I think I’d take that for Andersson + Pospisil

I agree that if the Flames are trying to get players to help now they will target a guy like Byram. I am just not sure I am aligned with Andersson+Pospisil for him.

I certainly don't see that. Andersson's five on five xGF% was 48.1% via moneypuck, and 49.06% on naturalstattrick (which I generally reference).

Andersson aslo underperformed his expected goal totals at 5 on 5 by a whopping 20 goals due to having a terrible on ice shooting % (5.68%) which was a clear outlier for his career. He certainly wasn't at his best (far from it) but poor offensive puck luck, tough assignments, a young defense partner, and injury all played a role in his down season.

Coincidentally Byram just so happened to outperform his expected goal totals at 5 on 5 by 18 goals which aligns with having a clear career high on ice shooting % of 11.59%

On FlamesTalk they have discussed Byram and Rossi as potential trade targets for the Flames.

Let’s say the Flames move out Anderson and some picks/prospects and are able to get both RFA’s do you think that pushes the Flames into the playoffs next year?

Huberdeau-Rossi-Coronato
Zary-Kadri-Pospisil
Farabee-Frost-Sharangovich
Lomberg-Backlund-Coleman

Byram-Weegar
Bahl-Parekh
Solovyov-Pachal

A mid teens pic for Anderson, is there a need to add from either side?

Redwings (13), Bluejackets (14), Canadians (16,17)

I think after 18 we would/should require a little more such as with Senators (21) think we would want a second asset, maybe Kleven (23 - LD - RFA - this last year was his first full season)

Trading Raz to the Habs for 16 would also feel like an extra kick-in-the-pants because now the trade becomes Monahan and Andersson for the ability to sign Kadri.

I personally wouldn't be upset but guaranteed that fact would keep getting resurrected every so often as long as Kadri remains a Flame.

That's acceptable for me personally. Byram Bystedt definitely fills those voids I previously posted.

I've also been on the Bystedt train for a couple months now.

If the remaining vets just perform on par as this past season (as a whole) , I would assume Coronato, Zary, Frost, Sharangovich, and Farabee to do even better. That plus Rossi could net a divisional spot.

Flames were only 5 points out of 3rd and I can easily see any of the 3 divisional teams dropping to a wild card next year.

Yes, I think it does. We almost made it this year, and that roster you posted is better.

I expect teams will embarrass themselves chasing McKenna so all the Flames have to do is win a few more winnable games than they did last season.

You would have to switch Rossi and Kadri that top line would be butchered with size mismatch.

Backlund and Coleman being 4th liners make them prime trade candidates.

I dont know... I feel like St Louis will probably be a strong threat again and Minnesota probably wont have the same injury luck all year that they did so they will probably be better than this year. LA is better than I thought based on how they almost handled the Oilers. I'm not sure the Flames finish that much better next year but its possible if Vegas falls off a cliff or something.

Anaheim should take some major strides with JQ. Utah has the 4th overall picks and ripe with young players.

With the talk of Morgan Reilly potentially being traded… what would the leads to add for the flames to trade them Andersson in exchange for Reilly? Not sure if they want Andersson or have any use for a right-shot defenseman but, if they are looking to shake things up in Toronto, he might fit the bill.

Reilly is a left shot defenceman but he is signed to 5 years at $7.5 million AAV. And he just came off his worst year statistically. He has a NTC but I suppose it’s possible Kadri might be able to convince him to waive for Calgary. In any case, I think Reilly is bordering on being a cap dump.

To be clear… I’m not trying to advocate for Reilly being a big target that the flames should be looking for. I’m thinking that the Leafs would have to add some kind of sweetener to the deal for the flames to take on Reilly’s contract. It’s the sweetener that I’m interested in more - if it’s something significant. I’d even be fine with the flames retaining and flipping Reilly if the value was there.

The problem is that I don’t think the leafs have anything left to trade that’s of much value in terms of prospects or picks. Their 2026 and 2027 1st round picks are already traded. And even their 2028 1st round pick is in reserve due to those picks sliding if the leafs finish in the bottom 5 or 10 in 2026 or 2027, respectively. So I don’t think the leafs have anything in terms of sweeteners that could be worth it for Calgary to take on that contract.

I dont want Reilly lets start with that, but considering he would be a dump with an upgrade in Andersson I'd want more.

The more would have to be large. Boston already has their 1st next year. Doesn't seem to make sense. No thanks.

taking a cap dump attached to a flawed player for a pick isn't the worst idea. But it would be better if the player had 1 year left, and the team was over a barrell b/c they need the cap space immediately to sign a UFA.

They were 2 points behind Florida and 5 behind the grease this season. Tied the Blues and finished ahead of Montreal and New Jersey.

Technically they should have made the playoffs this year. So I’d say yes.
