Right.
Terrible trades, to pick up a winger who has 3 90-point seasons and is a Selke Trophy finalist, or a center who has averaged far better than PPG for 6 straight seasons, including a 60 goal season and a Hart trophy.

Matthews (contract expires next year): franchise player, can score and does play a two way game. Negative is mostly that he won't play a physical game in the tough areas like the slot What it would take to get him: Matthews for 3 1sts + Lindholm + Tanev
Why it could work: a look at a franchise player with a generational shot
Marner (contract expires after another 2 seasons): gifted playmaker who can score and has patience to set up plays both N-S, and E-W. Negative is that when he's feeling press pressure or he gets physically bullied, he goes silent for long stretches. What it would take to get him: Marner for 2 1sts + 2nd + Lindholm
Why it could work: Marners' skill could be huge for Huberdeau's resurgence. Could also trade him next off-season if no interest in resigning
Nylander (contract expires next year): another gifted goalscorer who can pass and score timely goals. Mostly a N-S skater. Negative is when not inspired tends to have stretches where he doesn't score. Also not physical in the slot but sometimes can take a hit. What it would take to get him: Nylander for Toffoli, 1st
Why it could work: Flames get faster to have someone to play with Huberdeau
Tavares (contract expires in another 2 seasons): mostly a silent scorer who tries hard to lead by example. Negative is he's not very fast, doesn't get physical, tending to score mostly from the high slot. Doesn't offer much bang for buck. What it would take to get him: Tavares + 1st, 2nd for Markstrom
Why it could work: Flames get out from Markstrom's term for taking on salary with extra draft capital coming back for doing so

This is what I mean about Toronto players being over-hyped/over-valued (my opinion, anyway).

The Tavares trade is moot since he basically said he doesn't want to move.
But in every other trade Calgary would get the best player. Especially the Matthews and Marner trades basically mirror the Tkachuck trade and look what Florida paid to get a prime aged star player (Huberdeau, Weegar, 1st, prospect). It heavily backfired because Huberdeau turned into a pumpkin but the value looked great on paper but it also included the assumption that Calgary would re-sign guys who are in back nine of their careers to max length deals with most likely bad years at the end. This part is the part IMO why the trade looked so lopsided in the beginning.

If the Kadri contract is a boat anchor, then the only team i see that can and would take it is TO. We take Taveras back. Straight up.
Same ages. We take pain of dealing with $11mm for two years and they take pain of a longer term $7mm contract for 6 years. There is a NMC obviously.

If I'm Toronto, I don't do this, even if Calgary offers an additional 1st and 2nd.
This would be crazy for them to even consider.

Some of you really consider the team you're trading with. Kadri for Tavares is laughable. We're stuck with Kadri, whether you like it or not.

Not to mention why you would want Tavares at this point in his career.

There is a little more to it than personal stats. It's a team game, and you need strength at key positions. Players have salaries, and there is a salary cap. And players become UFAs when their contracts come due.
Listing individual stats as an argument ender is what they do in Edmonton.

Why would they take the massive drop off in player and the worse contract?

Good player and great way to get an extra pick. Combine this with trading some of our expiring guys to get more picks and you could start the waive of young talent while still being competitive.

The one that I saw on the THW site for Toronto had Nylander going to Calgary for Lindholm. Sure you add a top line scorer, but not sure how useful that is if you're Centers are Kadri and Backlund. I'm not too keen on adding salary for a less premium position even for a younger player. Both guys will want top dollar for maximum term. I'm personally trying to get away from third contract players who tend to be the least value. Sure they can produce, but it's at the absolute premium price.

Sure if they take one of Calgarys dinosaurs in return but they won't because they can't.
