Waivers is a lot different in baseball than it is in hockey though, right?

ESPN is speculating that its the White Sox.
I watch selective Blue Jays games (would watch more if not for Ted Rogers' greediness) and try to keep up on a casual level.
If they can get out from under Rios' contract, they can work out from getting out from under Wells' contract somehow some way...both, especially Wells and his $20+ mil contract next year, as you guys all know, are overpaid bums who never seem to be able to come through in the clutch. Paid in advance for their potential, a potential which has seemed to plateau. Imagine if they could've gotten Linecum a year and a half ago for Rios?
Add Ricciardi in there as a bum too, I expect him to leave a pretty big mess for the next GM to clean up in the next couple years.

Rios hits another homerun. Looks like he is responding well to the waiver claim speculation so far.

ADD me to the list of people who wants JP Ricciardi gone next season. I don't watch the Blue Jays game much (thank god for that) but I follow what is going on this team. I don't think JP ever made a good move as a Blue Jays GM. He signed some overpaid bums and none of them panned out. Frank Thomas, BJ Ryan, AJ Burnett, Lyle Overbay, Vernon Wells, Alex Rios and others. Only good move he made was Rolen but it comes with a huge price as well. But at least Rolen performed very well as a Blue Jays especially defensively.
Hopefully the Jays can get rid of Rios' huge salary and also Wells. Sign the Doc next season. Start putting some young players like Travis Snyder in the lineup. If they can't get rid of Scott Downs as a closer move him as a middle reliever.

Great outing by Tallet. Lind comes back from an 0-4 night and gets the game winning hit. Now lets try and score some runs for the doc tomorrow....

We need a clutch hitter, this team is the definition of no-clutch. Of course Lind and Hill are quickly changing their clutchness.

For all the criticism sent Rios way, he's still on pace to hit 20 home runs and drive in 90 runs. If he's playing center field like he should be those numbers combined with his ability to steal 30 bases would make him well worth the contract he has. Problem is that right now he's not being used in the right role and he gets associated with Wells.

Stats on a couple of the youngsters in AAA Vegas from The Tao of Steib
Quote:
* Travis Snider update: through 40 AAA games with Vegas, The Future is raking at a clip of .313-10 HR-34 RBI-1.025 OPS. I understand the super-2 super-bull takes precedence, but, wow.
* Brian Dopirak update: through 109 minor league games this season, Kevin Millar's Replacement has a line of .314-25 HR-86 RBI-.942 OPS. There is absolutely no justifiable reason that the soon to be 26 year old should continue to rake at AAA while Kevin Millar and his .663 OPS occupy a roster spot on a team looking to next season and beyond. Absolutely none.

Nice win by the Jays. Finally winning against a team they SHOULD be beating. Nice of the boys to finally give Halladay some run support. Frasor with 2 solid closes in 2 games. I know the team is middling, but its games like this, where they at least play to potential that make it fun to watch.

Jays made a mistake hiring him. As I mentioned in the sports book thread, Moneyball was all the rage at that time and Jays hired a Moneyball guy.
But if you've read Moneyball you'll understand why it can't work for the Blue Jays. It may have worked for the A's in an easy division but it could never work the against the Yankees and Red Sox.
The main protagonists of Moneyball are Giambi and the big three, Zito, Hudson and Mulder.. where are they now?
The only good player from that era of the A's is/was Swisher who the A's drafted in the 1st round when he wasn't on anyone radar.

Jays have approx. 24 hours to decide what to do with Rios. Personally I think they keep him.
Quote:
For Jays fans, this has got to be tough, but I guess it comes down this. Are you willing to risk Rios returning to his 2007 form with his current contract? Or are you more comfortable letting him leave and having another team take on that risk?
If he plays the way he's played this season for the next five years, and he stays on the Jays payroll, it would be another overpayment that the Jays simply can't afford with Vernon Wells' deal ready to kick into the $20+ million per season territory.
If Rios goes to another club and thrives there, that will look bad for the Jays too, but if he leaves and continues to struggle, then Toronto has given itself some much needed payroll flexibility.
Whether Rios stays or not, the true impact of J.P. Ricciardi's decision (which must be made in the next 24 hours) won't be felt for another season or two.

Keep the kid, if there was ever a way to get rid of Wells (wishful thinking, I know) that salary isn't half bad for a CF.
BTW, nice avatar SJ.

In my opinion the Jays should trade Rios. Free up more Salary to make some moves in the summer.
Ideally the player who should be moved is Wells but that will never happen. So the next choice is Rios.

White Sox claim Alex Rios. He is no longer a member of the Blue Jays.
Blue Jays receive nothing in return.
