Frankly, I love the term rebiggle. Not only does it sound ridiculous but it has no definition so clearly open to interpretation.
Lanny, you’ve really got something with that. Since that was said, I’ve gone from calling it that as a sarcastic joke to just calling that what the Flames are doing, which I think falls with my current thinking of what our market needs.

Looking at the trade, I didn’t love it. Rasmus put CC over a barrel when he refused to sign an extension. It’s his right, but I didn’t like how it went down. At the end of the day, that’s the business of hockey. I wanted to blame CC for not moving him a year earlier (and I did at first), but then I was reminded that Rasmus was not all that good last season. In the end, Rasmus wants to leverage his high level of play this year, and CC was able to leverage a very solid return. (An aside, I hate Vegas even more. I can’t wait until they hopefully age out and go into a deep black hole)

Rebiggling. I’m going to (generously) assume the team is now following a philosophy of constant rebiggling. Ever since the Johnny-Tkachuk fiasco, I have believed that a team in a less favorable market, should constantly “rebiggle”. Keep players on solid reasonable long term contracts that add value. Trade players 1.5 years out if they don’t want or can’t be extended. Trade for high pick, solid prospect, and serviceable player on reasonable contract. Limit trading picks out. Maintain a large pool of picks and let the scouts and development work away. Have a surplus of good prospects. Sign UFAs to short deals to fill gaps that are short term. Trade them at the end of the term for a mid pick (assuming these are mid players since they signed a 1-2 year deal at reasonable cost.

We are not in a tax haven location. We are not a “sexy” big city like TO or many US destinations. If we have a big boat out back, it’s in the snow, not the canal. We should trade for and or sign players who want to play here. We should not hesitate to trade them when that changes or when the trade value exceeds their keep value.

So, I hate the trade, because it’s Vegas, because it isn’t a short term win, and because the player was able to put us in the position. BUT, I love that we get back solid draft capital and a defenseman who fills a solid need and will make the team fun to watch. I hate say, but I would much rather watch us lose a lot of close games and finish closer to the bottom, than be mid and finish just in the playoffs and waste a week playing a Colorado and being blown out. I have watched some entertaining games this year. Many close. Some good plays. Some fun fights. Some big hits. With that, we should have one of if not the highest draft pick we’ve ever had. That player should be very exciting in our system.

I really wanted a fix that would address our needs sooner. I bet CC did too! But, the fact we took a deal that plays the long game gives me hope that we will continue rebiggling which if done well, could make us much more competitive not now but in 3-4 years and give us a prospect system that would be at the top of the league for a decade.

How was our prospect base and draft pool a short few years ago?

Let the rebiggling continue!

Weegar interview up - He's very blunt and says at the end of the day Rasmus didn't want to be here and he cant fault him for that.

Vegas didn't pay this much for a rental, they will figure it out...they already have IMO. Ras didn't want to look like the bad guy who said only Vegas.

Weegar appears to be a lifer. Personally, don’t want to get rid of him.

I voted faceplant and don't think I'm a whiner or a lunatic. Just disappointed. Again.

I would put myself firmly in the "somewhat knowledgeable fan" category, but nowhere close to the expertise of many, even the large majority, of CP. And I think that's where a lot of it comes from. Maybe I'm off base here, but it always seems that on these deals the collective expectations of CP are rarely met. And then you get this post-mortem of, well under the circumstances its the best we could have hoped for - the GM's hand were tied. And maybe most frustrating is the, well hopefully Management has learned from this experience and will do better next time.

Obviously this is an overly simplistic take - just a thought on the day after.

Agreed. I think Weegar knows he’s the next captain of the Flames and if all goes well, might get a run or two as a greybeard with the next generation of Flames. There’s value in that too.

I expected a completely different interview based on this snippet. Thought the interview was great.

I guess one must ask what your expected return was, either now or a year before now?

Nope, simply sharing a line out of the interview where the team knew this was coming and simply pointed out Rasmus didn't want to be a flame and they all knew it.

I actually clicked on the middle one but my phone decided to switch it to the bottom one because my phone screen is broken and is a pos.

I'm a whiner. I don't like letting Vegas be able to top 10 protect that 2027 pick without having to give up another pick for lost time. I'm also skeptical that the Flames will manage Whitecloud as an asset effectively. I said my piece about Whitecloud in the Conroy thread. If they make another move to shift Whitecloud or another vet out, I maybe come around a bit. But at this stage I think the Flames are the nice friendly team in the league and in this league nice guys don't finish last. But they spend eternity hanging out with a changing group of other losers.

a "face plant" would be losing him for nothing...that is a ridiculous take IMO

Its a first, a second (potentially another first), and an NHL player valued at a 2nd. What rental dman has gotten more?

People don't have to think its a big win or anything, Im not calling it a HR but face plant isn't even debatable. Like the Boston deal for the Leafs pick wasn't even a legit rumor they were also offering a 27 and it only came with an extension he wasn't going to sign.
