Could also be the reason why Weegar hasn't sign, he's banking on himself to have a career year with Sutter and then cash in.

But they don't appear to want to do this. Why would they? Just because they can does not mean that they should. I feel much better about having Weegar in the lineup all year than I do about whatever he and his expiring contract would return in a trade.

It doesn't sound like it. The player himself has confirmed that both sides are working on a contract now.

"We're a better team than Florida is" - Mackenzie Weegar
Can't wait till he's signed.

Considering Florida just sent their best forward and best defenseman to Calgary, it would logically follow...

Not to nitpick, but wouldn't Ekblad be hands down their best defenseman?
With that said I love Weegars response

I have seen some analysts posit that Weegar is actually the one who drove that pair. It will be interesting to see what effect the change has on both of them.

I know Huberdeau has alluded to it somewhat but I wonder how choked Weegar was to get traded. One year away from getting a big payday and they get rid of him.

So Weegar has to be extended on Monday for it to make sense?
But Monday is kind of a Holiday?

If Weegar was even half of the driving force behind that pairing, what a huge win for the flames.

There's a lot of Panthers players who will see their numbers go way down. They have other defensemen, like Montour (who I like and believe is underrated) and Forsling, but nobody who tilts the ice the way Weegar does. Another question is who do they have to make Bennett and Duclair look like top-tier second-liners?They lost Mason Marchment too, although Lundell will take a step forward. I bet Ekblad's numbers go down.

Do you mean "very average second-liners"? Bennett was the #60th most productive centre in a 32-team League last year, all the while having an all-world left winger chained to his hip.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if Lundell pushes into the second line spot over Bennett this year, and then just the same as here, Bennett is forced to either play 3rd line minutes with nobodies or be bounced around as a winger.

You're very right. I should have said,"who do they have that will make Bennett and Duclair look like second-liners". My bad.
So Impressive that Huby ended up with 115pts.

He's still going to get his big payday and given that he was one year away from free agency and the Panthers salary cap situation, he probably was preparing to possibly play somewhere else. It was likely a much bigger surprise for Huberdeau.
