About 2,000 people whose residences were spared during the Fort McMurray wildfire earlier this month will be prevented from going home for several more months because of caustic ash.

Extensive environmental testing found elevated levels of pH in the ash in the soil, which could cause burns and other irritations, around nearly 600 homes in the Abasand, Waterways and Beacon Hill neighbourhoods, making them unsafe for habitation.

I can't even imagine the emotional roller coaster. Your home was spared from the fire, but you can't go home for a few more months. This after probably already preparing to go home this week.

I almost wonder if some of those people would be better off if their house was destroyed. Just in being able to claim insurance and then move on.

I kinda thought you could claim living expenses if your house is inhabitable through insurance. Is that a thing?

I wonder if running some sort of big vacuum truck over the ash would help mitigate this. I can't imagine just waiting for it to rain would be a good idea, as the ash will get in the soil and water.

I am up here for work.

When I got to the south end of FMM, there were still fire fighters on the side of the road actively applying water to hot spots. It was very evident that there were still a lot of hot spots around.

Just got the numbers in for FYiDoctors helping people who have lost/forgot their glasses in the confusion of the evacuation.

875 free pairs of glasses were dispensed, across the country.

My brother was not only housed in Firebag for 3 days at Suncor's expense, they flew him out to Edmonton, secured his car and flew him back to get his car all on their dime. He's got nothing to do with Suncor. That's amazing

Saw an update from a friend's Facebook page. A friend of his went back today. He had unfortunately left some windows open as it was very warm the day of the evacuation. He lasted less than an hour in his house before he got a headache from the smell.

It's for a good cause. I'd love to see you say that to someone's face who's lost it all, you tasteless prick.

You're probably one of those people who think "Hope they don't play burn it to the ground HAHA" is funny.

What a childish overreaction. nik's joke was a an obvious harmless joke, I really doubt anyone from Fort McMurray would be offended because someone poked fun at how horrible Nickleback is.

I don't find his comment offensive, I doubt very many other people would either.

Unless they like Blue Rodeo or Nickleback.
