I don't doubt he was seeing what was available, but not breaking the roster apart to sell off assets helps this season and not giving up picks or prospects for over-priced rentals is the best move big picture.

Who gives a ####?
As long as it doesn't involve any one in our core players (which it wouldn't) to pick up a top 9 player with upside from somewhere, then it's not hurting us.
You build up extra assets so that you can make such moves - to add - without it hurting you and fact is we have plenty of depth. We have NHL or near NHL ready players, too many that not all are going to make this roster. There will barely be room for Bennett next season. If you can flip say Stajan and a Reinhart, Granlund etc for a guy that can help you now and a few years, why not?
Edit: AND look at that! Flames trade Sven Baertschi. Using their assets.

This trade makes sense, Poirier has passed him and he will never catch Gaudreau. Is he effective outside the top 6?
Interested to see what is coming back.

with Baertschi's waiver status, this might look like a great return by October 1st.
Look at the Flames depth chart and the fact that he has to be top six to be effective.

I'm sorry, you can't make that trade with your biggest rival, one who happens to be in your division as well.
If Vancouver is my only palatable option I'm waiting until the draft to move him.
Do not like this at all.

Who gives a **** if we over-pay for rentals during a rebuild? A lot of people.
And I like how you ramble on about moving assets to bring someone in and then end off with pointing out we dealt a prospect for a pick like that validates your thoughts on spending assets on guys that can help now.

Team plays their hearts out, scratches and claws their way to a playoff spot on March third, and the GM sells our depth for draft picks.
Thanks, Brad.

He's a good player, so yes. I'm not disappointed in either of the trades on their faces, I'm upset because I was hoping he'd use a pick to help the team make a push.
We lost a top-6 forward and our best player (to injury) and didn't do anything to push forward.
I realize this is still a rebuild, but you have to show confidence in our players. If we could have sent a 2017 2nd for Chris Stewart to help replace Glencross, why not?
