Story time: I had a great aunt who shouldn't have been driving in her eighties. She had an at-fault t-bone accident in an intersection. The other driver wasn't injured, but she had a broken hip. That wouldn't have counted as a fatality accident in any statistics, but it definitely precipitated her death. She never walked again, and was released from the hospital directly to a care facility where she died shortly thereafter.
Her long-time family doctor had signed her medical release previously, which was ridiculous, but I feel bad for Dr's needing to be the bad guy on that stuff - it really should be a gov't test.
So in that case, while it wasn't a direct fatality, the cost of repairing two vehicles plus a long hospital stay plus a few months in long term care add up to a pretty significant societal cost. Even if you assume she would have died shortly thereafter from something else, having her not drive would have saved society a bunch of money and her a bunch of pain and suffering.
|
She likely didn’t have a life insurance product at that time that the change in risk from her not dying would have affected the probability of payout.
I am way down a rabbit hole of disagreeing with Iggy that insurance companies would pay for some of the retesting because it would reduce their costs. While your above example is likely a benefit of medical testing for drivers license renewals it it’s unlikely to change the profitability of insurance companies.

Had a friend who kept a long pinky nail. He told me there is a chinese superstition that the pinky should be at least as tall as the top knuckle of your ring finger, and if not, to keep the nail long so it is at least as tall. Otherwise, your life will be shortened or something like that. Pretty sure he wasn't a druggie, but I guess you never know.

Well there are plenty of permanent plans where the premiums are level, and some are self-funded as well. You wouldn't have a term policy where the rates rise after age 80 for sure, and I can't think of any that are available.

Wild. I remember seeing Chinese guys with long pinky nails back in high school. We had a large population of Chinese people at Churchill that were very insular and didn't interact with the rest of us. I didn't think they were coke heads, but it did seem odd to me. Neat to have an explanation after all these years.

Yes, yes, back when drug usage needed to be hidden and someone had a long fingernail as a tell-tale sign.
Now all the kids just huff Tranq down at the C-Train station.
Where has the class gone? The ambiance?

I agree insurers wouldn't pay for testing, but I think it would be a good idea for it to be mandatory, at least at a certain age.
The hundreds of thousands of dollars of extra medical car my great aunt got from AHS would cover the cost of many, many road tests.

I still remember my first exposure to an in person coke nail; Was an IHS sales guy coming to talk to us about Accumap and man did he fit the bill. Long pinky nail, greased hair, a sort of Miami Vice look to him, and just amped up personality. It was crazy how much he fit the stereo type.

Really wish they would show people how to use drive thru’s in drivers training… not sure why people are so scared to use the inside lane. Vehicles backed up on to the road while there is a perfectly good lane to use. Then to boot not paying attention when the line moves forward. Also if you are ordering for the whole office… go inside.

Not only the inside lane, but they feel the need to leave at least half a car length between them and the car in front of them, and often more - making the line much longer than it needs to be. When it's busy, it's a royal PITA.

https://www.vagabondjourney.com/why-...g-fingernails/
My understanding is that the long fingernail (ie: Pinky) isn't about good luck. It's a representation of status. It's similar to the value of light colored (no tan) skin.
The reason being is that those that are poor and work manual jobs cannot maintain long nails without them breaking. You also couldn't maintain light skin if you worked in the fields.
Pinky nail only might be the modern approach to this, but I dunno.

I mean if I'm 86, I'm cashing that thing out 10 years ago.

I'm quite impressed living in Panorama at how diverse all of the groups of teenagers I see are, especially whenever I go to Vivo. I'm sure they still have their cliques, but they don't appear to be based on race at all from what I can see

That is good. FWIW, it's not like races didn't mix in the 90s, either. We had every ethnicity and colour at all the parties and stuff. There was just this group of people that were Chinese that were maybe in IB or something? Like, they weren't in ANY of my classes and I didn't even know they were in my grade until grad. I was like, wtf, I thought I knew everybody.

Lifetime Suspension

Fast food places after 10pm have become so useless. Last night we had a long day and it was 11pm and went to pick up McDonald's. Took 3 minutes just for someone to even realize I was waiting to order. Then she interrupted my order 3 times while I was in the middle of ordering and kept getting my order wrong on the screen.
After finally getting to pickup windows I sat there for 10 minutes without anyone even acknowledging I was st the pickup window so I just drove off and made some peanut butter sandwiches when I got home.
Is it just me or is service really going down in Calgary? It's like nobody cares anymore. I worked at a mcdonalds 24 years ago and mcdonalds was just as busy back then and we'd never treat a customer like that.
