Centrifugal force is exactly how it works, at least for the common idea of space elevators:

From Wikipedia:

I guess you could have the teather drop down and not be under tension, but you'd need the counterweight to offset the mass of the rope being dropped still and I don't know how that would work since the counterweight would just move away in a different orbit as you reeled it out to counter the tether dropping. Some kind of station keeping rockets, I don't know that seems a LOT harder to pull off. I haven't thought much about a space elevator that wasn't under tension.

Hmm, good to know.
I'm ceratinly no expert, I stand corrected.

Haha! That's pretty much the roundabout conclusion that I came to in my head!

I would so totally name my Space Elevator "pie" for exactly this reason.

Synthetic Genetic Evolution

http://richarddawkins.net/articles/6...etic-evolution

Quote:
Scientists show that manmade nucleic acids can replicate and evolve, ushering in a new era in synthetic biology.

Synthetic genetic polymers, broadly referred to as XNAs, can replicate and evolve just like their naturally occurring counterparts, DNA and RNA, according to a new study published today (April 19) in Science. The results of the research have implications not only for the fields of biotechnology and drug design, but also for research into the origins of life—on this planet and beyond.

Not sure if this was posted yet, as it's fairly big news . . .

http://phys.org/news/2012-04-dark-th...-lack-sun.html

Quote:
From this new data they have calculated the mass of material in the vicinity of the Sun, in a volume four times larger than ever considered before.
"The amount of mass that we derive matches very well with what we see — stars, dust and gas — in the region around the Sun," says team leader Christian Moni Bidin (Departamento de Astronomia, Universidad de Concepcion, Chile). "But this leaves no room for the extra material — dark matter — that we were expecting. Our calculations show that it should have shown up very clearly in our measurements. But it was just not there!"

The Viking Mars Missions May Have Discovered Life in 1976

http://www.popsci.com/technology/art...ered-life-1976

But the evidence for life may have been hidden in Viking’s data all along. A new analysis of the data collected by probes Viking 1 and Viking 2 suggest the missions found evidence of microbial life more than three decades ago.

It’s merely concrete evidence that there is a stark difference between Viking’s LR experiment data and the control experiment data. And it’s evidence that the Viking data tracks with biological rather than non-biological data. More study is necessary (isn’t it always?), but if the cluster analysis is to be believed then our first shot at detecting microbial life in the soils of Mars may have hit pay dirt--and we didn’t even realize it.

A good blog post on Dark Matter to go along with the local dark matter measurements thing.

http://www.popsci.com/science/articl...-happens-cause

At the quantum level, it's been known for quite some time that causality doesn't have quite the same weight as it does on our classical level. However, this thought-experiment turned real-experiment is still pretty astounding, and shows effect can come before cause.

They take two particles that are either entangled or not entangled. They then form two groups of scientists. One group is meant to decide whether to entangle the particles or not, the other is meant to measure the particles and discern whether they've been entangled or not.

However, the really cool part is that the group measuring for entanglement measures first, before the other group decides to entangle the particles or not, and the measuring group always finds what the other group later decides to do. Effect before cause.

Other cool experiments on the quantum level that reveal the inadequacy of our intuitive perception of time are the delayed-choice experiment and the quantum eraser.

Okay, one more thing, having to do with the dark matter problem I posted about earlier. In another new study, they've come to the conclusion that the companion objects around our galaxy (satellite galaxies, globular clusters, etc.) got there from a collision a long, long time ago. Unfortunately for the standard theories of cosmology that include dark matter, this isn't the case, as those objects got there after forming apart from our galaxy, individually, and then being "caught up" by gravity.

Quote:
Kroupa concludes by highlighting the wider significance of the new work. “Our model appears to rule out the presence of dark matter in the universe, threatening a central pillar of current cosmological theory. We see this as the beginning of a paradigm shift, one that will ultimately lead us to a new understanding of the universe we inhabit.”
http://phys.org/news/2012-04-milky-companions-dark.html

Quote:
He also notes that nobody has been able to find a dark matter particle yet, despite a slew of efforts around the world in all sorts of interesting configurations. Maybe they’re not finding it because it isn’t there?

This whole dark matter hunt reminds me of the hunt for the luminiferous aether before Einstein gave it the ol' death blow.

The space shuttle enterprise is making its way to JFK Airport right now, and is going to be doing some low flyovers of important NYC locations. CNN will have live video of this.

I hope they start shooting fireworks from their aft torpedo bay and a light show with their forward phaser banks.

Artistic representation of a bunch of discovered exoplanets orbiting their stars. Pretty cool.

Larger images can be found on the NASA site:
