So, if Paramount's plan is to get people to re-watch the Original Series, it's working.

Balance of Terror is one of the best episodes from the original series with a nod to WW2 films like Run Silent Run deep. It was also the debut in Trek of Mark Lenard who later did an awesome job as Spocko's old man.

I liked it.
I might be having a brain fart, but I thought the Romulan ships were called War Birds. Pike called it a “Bird of Prey”, which is definitely Klingon.

In the original series the Romulan ships were Birds of Prey.
We also saw the Klingon D-7 In the Original series being used by the Romulans and it was named the StormBird Class.

Warbird most commonly refers to the D’deridex class, one of TNG’s sexiest creations.
If I was Pike I’d just retire right before the accident, saving kids in advance optional. Seems like the bad branch is primarily caused by Kirk not being in charge and the kids don’t factor in much, but who knows, maybe old Pike did a Dr. Strange time stone thing (the Klingon crystal is green too) and all those variations went wrong too.

A very minor timeline change, but two of the cadets were supposed to die in the accident, he changes it so that none of them die.

also, whenever they show clips from Discovery I'm reminded of what an over the top hackjob that show is. they have Pike's face comically melting like some $500 budget horror flick. I hope when it finally happens they do it in a way that honors his sacrifice while still acknowledging how grievous it is. what they did with Spock is a decent example, dude got the Anakin-lite treatment.

I watched Balance of Terror last night and they did a good job of paralleling the story on Strange New Worlds. The zoom in on Spock's eyebrow raise when the Romulan is first seen is perfectly recreated.
If you haven't seen the episode in a while (or never), it's a good companion to the SNW finale.

There was tons of nice little TOS touches like the villain music kicking in and the Shatner style lighting on the eyes / face of Pike in close up scenes. Loved it!
Also this is the first time we’ve seen the TOS movie uniforms on screen since Undiscovered Country? Always liked those, they’re so different

Kelsey Grammer and his crew are wearing them in the TNG episode he was in. It aired the year after Undiscovered Country was released (apparently the sets and costumes were reused from Undiscovered Country).
In Generations, Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise B are all wearing it.
According to this, the uniform style appeared in a few episodes of TNG over the years (often in flashbacks to Picard's younger days), and even an episode of Voyager: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki...s)#Appearances

After finishing the entire season, it's safe to say that not only is SNW the best Trek series since Deep Space 9, it's in the running for best series ever. Objectively I'd say it is the best Trek series, simply because it's combining the best production values of any ST show with strong writing on par with TNG/DS9. My only complaint is that I wish they'd stop constraining themselves with the original series aesthetic. The original Enterprise design shouldn't be touched obviously, and the uniforms are a nice subtle upgrade on the t-shirts from TOS, but it's jarring to see pan shots of the bridge and all of the bulbous red and blue light bulbs on Uhura's station. Just retcon the smaller stuff like that so it doesn't look out of place for a series set centuries in the future

My biggest complaint is the theme song.
TOS, TNG, DS9 and Voyager all have title sequences that establish exactly what kind of show you’re about to watch for the next hour.
This one does nothing for me, but at least the accompanying images are of the Enterprise flying through space.
The cast is good. Chapel, the Doctor and Pike are my standouts.
The guy who’s playing Spock is alright - I’ve never gotten the sense that any treatment of Spock since the 2009 movie actually understands the character, or Vulcans in general, and this one is no different.
Spock, Tuvok, Savik, even Sarek, have a bemused quality to them.
Like, they get the joke, they just don’t think it’s funny. It’s not that they don’t understand the concept of humour.
As I said, I don’t hate it. In most of the ways that matter, it gets things right.

You're dead inside. Show us on the Doll of the Enterprise where the Theme Song hurt you.

Right in the Picard.
Also in the Discovery.
Music is important for a show like this.
