Wasn't he catching for Mills in the first game?

If so tough to blame him when he is catching a guy that isn't a MLB level pitcher against a team that can hit (although also go right in the tank) like TB.

2 games is likely too small a sample size to make any real judgements on his ability to call a game but there have been some questions about Arrencebia's long term future at catcher so perhaps it is an issue for him.

Not sure why Snider is hitting lead off and Escobar in the 2 spot. Would it not make sense to flip those two? Cito's lineups make my head hurt sometimes.

Marcum had a rough inning there. Just hate when you see a start like that - even if it only resulted in one run - means it'll be lucky if Marcum makes it out of the 5th.

Was he pitching bad or was it bad calls by JP?

He seemed to just be missing over and over again. The pitch to walk in the run looked good to me, and it's not like I'm biased or anything!

Bautista brings home Snider on a sacrifice fly.

Yeah because he missed so often to the first couple of batters, he didn't get any calls to go his way. I was shocked the see the Jays play alittle small ball with Escobar's bunt.

The catcher's effect on the pitcher is so minimal, it's really disgusting that we keep having to discuss this disproven stigma. These pitchers are giving up runs on their own merits, not because of Arencibia.

Case Study: Ted Lilly

I disagree - If I'm a manager, I don't want my pitcher trying to over think things. Look no further than Ted Lilly who used to play for the Jays, who would shake off the catcher and invent pitches during the middle of the game.

I want a pitcher to toss the ball wherever the catcher wants him too.

The catcher should be one of the ones memorizing the opposing team's players power/hitting zones as well (the pitcher should be familiar with it, but the catcher really should be there to guide them).

A lot of pitchers have a tendency not to trust their stuff, especially if they get burned early on it.

So how many runs is that with Arencibia catching?

I'm sure he'll settle down, but....still.

Blue Jays keep bending over for the BoSox.

That's a lot. I'm glad he's up, figuring out how to call games in the big league.

I doubt its a factor, Marcum struggled to make strikes and was clearly missing his spots. He was off. Just a really poor start

How about how Jose Molina has handled Brandon Morrow. Seems like a situation where Molina worries about calling the game, and Morrow just focuses on throwing that particular pitch. I think thats been a key for Morrow to just trust his stuff and focus on just throwing his pitches rather than worrying about what pitch he's going to throw, when he's going to throw it, and than try to execute.

Exactly.

The whole stigma is based on small sample sizes. There's more than enough analysis out there that clearly finds there's little to no correlation between a catcher's ERA (adjusted for pitcher performance) from year to year. If there was such a thing as good game callers and bad, shouldn't the good ones be good every season?

Yeah, and everywhere I go am reading about how this is all Arencibia's detriment. This is ridiculous. Arencibia didn't make Marcum constantly miss the strike zone with his change-up. Arencibia didn't make Romero constantly hang his curveball.

A good catcher will notice that the curveball is always being hung and not call for it so often.

Pitch selection is huge during a game.

A source has told Foxsports.com that Overbay was placed on waivers and was not claimed by any team. The article feels as though the Tampa Bay Rays are the most likely destination. He is scheduled to earn around $2 million for the remainder of the season.

Great quote from Cito after the game today:

Blue Jays improve to 60-54 with the win. Said Cito: "I'm pretty sure some of you guys didn't think we'd win 60."
