I'm 95% it's because they've failed an audit/the audit is underway/there is some other dispute they're having with the province about opening.
Sending traffic to an area that is under construction creating a crappy situation has NOT been a concern at any point throughout this project, and it certainly won't be as they approach a million bucks in late fees.

Is there a way to do this now, or is it impossible?
If the ramp from 52 St to WB 22X was on the west side of the bridge, it would be too close to the exit ramp for Deerfoot. That's the main reason it's like that.

I'm waiting for a response from AB Trans on both Stoney SE and that bridge. They don't like to say much. I look forward to being able to drive home to see my parents when I please instead of planning my day around the hell hole that is Deerfoot Trail.
Any idea why? Is it to prevent excess traffic on the 22X portions that are still under construction?
That had been my speculation; that the portion from 88 street to 17 ave would be open even if the 22X/ Deerfoot portion was not 100% complete.
Personally, I think the bigwigs just want their big grand opening celebration. If they open it up to 22X, they won't ever get to close it again for the big rope cutting ceremony and photo-ops. And if there is one thing Rick McIvor won't miss out on, it is a chance to get his picture taken.

A lot. At $75k a day, which is a lot of cash to hand over for you or I, on a $785M project its a drop in the bucket. That was why I was asking earlier whether the conglomerate who won this bid really has a problem with these fees, or whether these fees were considered particularly expensive. When you are doing a job for $785M and then end up being paid $784M is it really that big of a deal? Its a miniscule percentage of the whole contract.
I don't know, because I don't work in the field at all. I am purely a bystander, but the penalty doesn't look too severe.

"Oh, we need to take another one, you blinked in that one"

They probably wanna have another gathering like the one they did last time, media, McIver, and everybody. Given how late it'll be, they'll probably try to be a bit more low key.
In the case of this project, I'd speculate that maybe quality was compromised to stay on time. They closed the biggest new bridge at Deerfoot/22 yesterday for emergency repairs, after having opened it only a few days prior. Feeling the pressure of the deadline, maybe.

Peigan was a sh**storm when I took it from Stoney to 52 St. today. In part due to all the massive semis going into the industrial area. But I believe that light needs to stay green longer.

Yup, I've been saying that for several months now. It's ridiculous.

True, but the contractor obviously isn't making $785 million in profit. I have no idea what their profit would be from the construction piece (as opposed to the maintenance contract), but odds are that $1 million will not be a miniscule percentage of that.

I have been driving that route for the past month and most of the time it hasn't been that bad. On the odd day though it can be horrible and the light barely let any traffic through. Hopefully they open Stoney past Peigan ASAP

I've been completely avoiding it during rush times, but every time I've driven it at non rush times, it's still a 5+ light wait, while every other direction at the intersection basically has no delays.
And it's only as little as 5+ light waits because I go into the left lane where the only option is to turn left. Staying in the right lane to go straight probably adds another 3-4 lights.
The temporary fix is as simple as increasing the green time, which shouldn't be hard.
I don't use Peigan and 52nd intersection anymore because of how bad the traffic is there. In the mornings I detour south to 50th ave to bypass waiting at 52nd going eastbound on peigan, and in the evenings i go to glenmore trail. it is redonkulous.
