To be clear this isn't what he said.
- He said there was interest in Weegar
- He wondered if Weegar would be open to moving

This is what he said. He hasn't actually heard that Weegar is open to moving.

"One name to keep an eye on is Weegar, there’s interest and although I haven’t been told this specifically, I do wonder if he’s one of the vets that may not want to ride out a rebuild."

In the summer I recall Conroy saying something along the lines of him calming the waters and asking guys to see how the season starts as he wasn’t planning on making more moves. If some vets are asking about it now, they probably just respected the GMs ask to let the dust settle for a few months.

There was some speculation that Weegar could be in that group who wants out. I was looking last night on CapWages and I think there would be lots of takers for Weegar.

I wonder about a team like the NYR. They obviously have a contender lineup and have some free agent defenseman after this season and of course Shesterkin in line for a huge raise. Bringing in someone like Weegar could give them some cost certainty and solidify their blue line for a while. Then they wouldn't have as much pressure for both Lindgren and Miller.

Could a deal be built around Miller and another asset for Weegar

To NYR
Weegar
3rd

To CGY
Miller
Perrault

Guessing they wouldn't be too interested in moving Miller but he is also going to be in line for a hefty raise even as an RFA.

Of course there is interest, he’s the best player on our team!

That deal is VERY slanted to Calgary. Miller is a key piece for NYR. And then adding their best prospect on top? No chance.

The same Weegar who in the off season talked about not wanting to take the easy way out and wanting to stay here and see it through?

Maybe, and hear me out, theres nothing to any of this.

I'd guess the hot start hasn't changed their mind and they know the team is likely to get worse this season or next. I doubt there is anyone in the league who thinks the Flames are an actual contender.

Weegar has indicated many times, publicly, that he loves it here and wants to be part of the solution. Until he suggests otherwise, the spitballing regarding his name is just opinionated conjecture.

To be fair I said this was my feelings not what I was told, I'm sorry for sparking chatter about Weegar.
There's a few vets who are signed with term that have changed their minds.

I was simply spitballing who it could be, I'm very certain that its NOT Kadri or Backlund, and we know Huberdeau isn't going anywhere so that leaves a few names obviously but would have to be someone who would garner interest from other teams.

Understood, and I also understand that was your opinion and not sourced info. Didn't mean to infer otherwise. I just don't think it would be him given all he has said and done over the past year especially.

Coleman is one I feel like could be changing his mind based on his offseason comments.

He mentioned how much he loved Calgary, but also kept the door a little open with some comments on getting older and wanting another chance to contend.

But they are in a playoff spot right now, so my guess is unless they are out of it by the deadline that nobody with term is moving.

Coleman would make a lot of sense, the guy is as competitive as they come. He does have a 10 team “Yes” list and two more years at $4.9m, so that makes him a little more difficult to move, plus he is the type of player that helps develop a culture for a young team, so I can’t see Conroy wanting to move him just to move him.

Yeah I don't think any of the veterans with term will get moved just to be moved.

Kuzmenko, Mantha, Rooney, Barrie, Hanley ... those are the guys that will get moved no matter what. With Mantha of course off that list now due to the injury.

Kadri, Coleman, Weegar, Andersson...those are the guys that are only getting moved if a team pays what would probably be seen as an overpayment and if they say they are open/want to move.

Huberdeau...likely unmoveable.

I wonder what type of value we can expect for Vladar?

He has a .906 sv %, good for 24th overall in the league. About 6 teams don't have a goalie as good as him. He also has a shutout under his belt already. His GAA is better than wolf's, good for 18th overall in the league.

We aren't getting Askarov return for Vladar, but it shouldn't be a huge amount less. Askarov got Edstrom ( a former 1st) a goalie prospect and a conditional 1st.

IMO a former 1st rounder or conditional future 1st is in the right ballpark for Vladar. Calum Ritchie maybe? Roughly half the value of Askarov.

ya we're not getting Ritchie or a first. I would say a second or a 3rd + b prospect is more realistic

^ Agreed, we likely recoup a 3rd and get a prospect.

All of the Flames recent dealings should help manage expectations.

But why? Vladar is playing great in the NHL already. He's got another year of control at only 2.2 million. Why wouldn't we push for at least half of Askarov's value? He's only 5 years older than Askarov, and is about to hit the goalie prime years. Good pedigree as well, crazy strong AHL numbers with Boston.

Teams have seen what Vladar is at the NHL level. Askarov, not so much and he also has a higher pedigree.

They wouldn't be selling Vladar on potential. They'd be selling him for what he is (also on an expiring deal so there isn't even any control).

Yeah and what he is is a better performing goalie than Markstrom, who we got a first + for in the summer with a worse contract.
