A really cool scenario for this draft in regards to CGY would be something like getting a top 10 pick in a trade, keeping 16 and taking someone like Leonard (trade only happens I'd he's available at that pick) and then use 16 on Simashev or Dragevich, just cut a huge swing on one of these D men.
Although walking out with say a Leonard AND a Ritchie or Danielson is sexy AF too.
That's the kind of stuff you do a hard retool for.

If Leonard is available at 10, the other team likely passes on that trade. No reason for Calgary not to make another pick.

What if Leonard is gone, but Moore is still available?

There will be someone desirable at 10 regardless.

Good article. It shows just how divergent scouts are on particular players. One scout will say a guy is a top-10 lock, and another that he wouldn’t take him until late in the 20s. Some focus on upside, and others about the likelihood of developing into an NHLer.

Reminds me a bit of how scouts were debating who was the line driver and who was just a compliment on the Tkachuk-Dvorak-Marner line for the knights.
Only difference is all 3 players are draft eligible at the same time.

Sounds like scouts love Leonard. A couple interviewed in the Athletic article have him ranked higher than Smith. I think he goes before Moore for sure.

I like Leonard better too, but Moore has plenty of advocates.

Leonard for me. Moores speed is drool inducing but as far as top end complete packages go, I think Leonard has the edge. And if all things are considered equal between the two? I'll go with the RHS.

Does it make you want to trade back and add another pick? Seems like 21 could be the same as 16.

They seemed very high on But and very low on Cristall and Sale (less so).

I expect someone they really like will drop to 16. Too risky to assume they’ll drop to 21 unless they’re going way off the board.

That was interesting too. Cristall not getting much love. I wish we had two picks like the others suggested. Something safe like Danielson and then a flyer on a russian.

This might be the draft where the return on dropping down is really high.
Get an additional second/third instead of third/fourth.
My thoughts are that the Flames might like to fill some cupboards and have 2-3 top guys that they think should be there and if they are not that they would like to drop into the 20-22 range and draft Ritchie.

I really hope the Flames don't mess around here and if they don't have commitments from any of Hanifin, Lindholm, Toffoli, Tanev, or Backlund they need to be moved.
I think the following picks could be in play in a trade.
8. Detroit
10. St. Louis
13. Buffalo
14. Pittsburgh
17. Detroit
20. Seattle
25. St.Louis
29. St.Louis
30. Carolina
Get 2 more of those picks and you have a huge opportunity to really leave the draft with some really good pieces.

Yes, I found it odd he seemed to think it was Leonard or bust. Lots of other options.

Updated with 3 additional impeccable Sandman player profiles - going to get the mega goalie update done hopefully today and also compose as a extensive Twitter thread.
It's beginning to look a lot like Draftmas...the most wonderful time of the year.

Athletic staff mock draft has McKenzie selecting
16. Calgary Flames: Brayden Yager, C, Moose Jaw (WHL)
The Flames are in need of dynamic talent whichever way they can get it through this draft class. Considering they’re in best-player-available territory, having a player like Yager fall to them at 16 would go a long way to bolstering their prospects cupboard. The goalscoring ability, despite his size, is a bit too tantalizing to pass up for Calgary. — Julian McKenzie
