People have to remember that the interview will be a big part of it. Do we really know how much hand these guys have had in building these teams? Let Burkie make the qualified decision. It's not like Poulin is a bad candidate either, can easily see him as the ass. GM .

I haven't read all 70 something pages but one name I'd like to throw out there is Martin Madden. He's the head of Anaheim's scouting since 2009. Their prospect pool is always solid and Burke just worked with him before coming to Calgary. Just some food for thought.

Still want Ryan Jankowski. Drafted very well in NYI for those 5 years, and then really helped Montreal in the last 3 years. I wanted Feaster to hire him when they were looking for an AGM, and eventually settled on Weisbrod. No idea how his contract works with Hockey Canada, however. Maybe not in a GM capacity (have no idea if he is qualified or not), but as an AGM, I think it is the perfect next step for this guy and would be huge for a rebuilding organization like the Flames are (and like NYI were and Montreal were).

Friedman says lots of teams are not liking how Buffalo is running their search. Says teams will likely tell Calgary to wait for the offseason especially if it is a scouting guy.
Also says LaFontaine may ultimately become GM for Buffalo and just hire a guy to advise him. Healy says LaFontaine is starting to think he can do the job.

No brainer for teams to ask to wait for guys like Futa. Honestly I'd like to see what Burke can acquire for the rental assets the Flames have.
But on the flip side it would be nice to have the GM in place before the draft. But if they have one guy in mind and Buffalo is screwing themselves, just means the Flames will get the pick of the litter later on.

There was a report that Buffalo had asked the Kings AGAIN to talk to Futa after they had already declined them once. I can see how that would really hinder your relations with other teams after a team said no, nothing internally had changed, and yet they felt like they should ask again.
Lack of respect IMO.

Also read a report that the Sabres have asked to talk to 15-20 people around the league and that pissed some teams off. Do they really need to talk to that many people? Can't they whittle down the list by resume only?

I don't see why people would be pissed at a team wanting to interview a lot of people. Say yes or say no, why be mad because they're casting a broad net?

And this is why it's great to have Burke doing the search. LaFontaine is cool but I'm more than sure he knows squat about how to conduct business. Especially since his learning was done at the Islanders School of suckyness.

Exactly. I'd rather wait until summer for the right GM then hire a bufoon out of desperation now (*cough* McTavish *cough*).

So now this thread also gets derailed by a Jankowski debate?? Seriously??!

Can't find the report, but IIRC they are mad because they think LaFontaine may not be interested in certain people and may only be trying to compile information on different teams through the interviews (e.g. scouting reports on players/prospects).

How hard can it be to pick a GM? Just look at the applicant and hire the guy with the most cups. /Oilers.

Having a GM in place before the draft won't do any good. When Button was hired as GM, Dallas made it a condition that he couldn't participate in the draft as he was privy to Dallas' inside information. Burke has said that the hiring requires patience, so I'd think it happens this summer.

I believe the trades were:
Kotalik + regehr for butler
2nd round pick for Byron
I remember feaster saying that

Isn't that why teams have scouts, why not just do it themselves?
