Well that's the second unnecessary rape scene that didn't occur in the books. Not sure what to think.

Don't get your hopes up. IMDB is not credible, which is where that article is getting it's source from. IMDB trolls have put "Michelle Fairley" on the cast list for the season finale 2 years in a row.

I swear it was just to show how everyone ####s things up for Doran. Doran had made a secret pact to marry his daughter Arianne to Viserys but Viserys Viserying it up gets himself killed. Oberyn deciding to fight the Mountain, causing extra strife between the Martells and the crown while nearing leading to civil war in his own kingdom. Arianne trying to crown Myrcella to cause a war because of Oberyn's death while Quenytn is on his way to woe Daenerys. And finally Quentyn deciding it's a good idea to play with dragons.
Poor Doran, surrounded by screw-ups.
But it also would help explain why the Martells will align themselves with Aegon, if that ends up being the case, while not doing anything for Daenerys despite her existence. Aegon, if real, would be their relatives though so...

I believe he was talking about the attempted rape of Gilly.
But feel free to go on and enable rape culture with jokes like that.

Actually I was an episode behind and was talking about the Sansa stuff, but yeah, the Gilly stuff wasn't much better. Really lazy and vulgar writing, IMO.

For the Sansa thing the one part I dont understand is where they are going with it
Ramsey couldn't have been more hated so it wasn't needed there, and so far (even though it's only been 1 episode to be fair) it seems more to be a vehicle for some kind of Theon retribution, which is definitely the wrong way to use that

That's what I meant. It was completely unnecessary for advancing the plot and really just seemed like a tactic for shocking the viewers. I'm on the fence when it comes to using violence and sexual violence against women as a plot device, but I think it's repugnant when it's done gratuitously.

Minus Doran/Hotah, Dorne has been pretty disappointing this season. There were really no better actresses for the Sand Snakes?
And their entire plan was to kidnap Myrcella at the gardens, in the middle of the day, all while Doran sits atop and watches? Very sloppy writing.

Is it the actresses? Or is it the caricatures they're written as?
I'm still kind of choked about no Arianne Martell.

How do you see things playing out otherwise?
IMO, as soon as the writers decided Sansa would be married off to Ramsay, she was going to be abused if they were going to maintain any consistency with Ramsay's character. The only thing that would have kept her from being overtly raped was if she feigned being into it.
So is that the answer? Or do you undermine everything established about Ramsay, and make him deferential to Sansa's wants? Or do you just have the abuse happen off camera, because somehow knowing a woman is assaulted but not having to see it is somehow better?
I'm not being snarky, I genuinely want to know what you think should have happened without the "unnecessary" sexual violence.

^^ Why not just speed up the escape story that happened in the books to happen before the wedding? As others pointed out, the abuse added nothing to either character's arc.

Escape driven by what?
Also, was it agreed that it's now OK to discuss book storylines that never occurred and have passed?

Why is Finger Cookin talking about Jon's death in the other thread? What an absolute ass hat.

The close up of Sam saying John always comes back just fuels more fire for his return as the Lord of Light.
I find the writing is getting sloppier the further away/ahead they get from the books.. but that Hardhome scene saved the season for sure.
