There is NFW I would trade Coleman with retention. He is the ultimate playoff warrior and more importantly a perfect mentor for the kids, and he is healthy. If he asks to be traded, so be it. Retention to get a higher pick that will likely never be Blake Coleman isn't worth it.

Wait, there's real smoke around McLeod to CGY? Sweet.

Can someone please explain to me why the Flames would target Mike McLeod? The guy has never even had a 30 point season in the NHL and he turns 26 in a couple of months. Go for the younger player with higher upside please.

Why would they target Sharangovich for Toffoli? Look how smart a lot of ppl were with that one......

McLeod is a great natural center who does a ton of 200ft work in the same sense as Lindholm. Points might not be there but he's a great piece to have. Would make the PK even more deadly.

On top of that, I think he's another Sharangovich or Zacha just primed to break out in a new scene. And if we are replacing Lindholms game in the aggregate, you can't do much better than bringing in McLeod who ticks off every box outside of goals and assists, and it's not far off Lindholm in the 2023 season either.

Tanev was likely to be a rental anyways. Would be great to trade him and get some decent picks/assets and then re-sign him in the offseason for a reasonable deal. I’m assuming a 2nd round pick + 3rd round pick as the return for him… potentially a late first round pick depending on the team.

The sign-and-trade for Hanifin is going to be interesting. In theory, they usually drastically increases the trade value. Hoping for a 1st round pick + A-level prospect.

Lindholm as a rental should return a 1st round pick + 2nd round pick + B-level prospect IMO.

I have to imagine any trade for Markstrom that would be considered “too good to turn down” would have to include a 1st round pick and potentially more if it includes salary retention from the flames (I think that’s unlikely for a contract with 2 years left on it). Overall, I think it’s more likely the flames end up trading Vladar… there are several teams that will likely be open to trading decent goalies so I don’t know if any team will want to pay a high enough price for Markstrom that Conroy goes for it. I think Vladar could return a 3rd round pick.

If the flames ended up trading Hanifin (extended), lindholm, Tanev and Vladar by the TDL… I think they should get back something like:

2 x 1st round picks
2 x 2nd round picks
2 x 3rd round picks
A-level prospect
B-level prospect

A pretty good haul for the flames to let their scouts take some big swings at the draft. Plus it could be exciting to see if the flames can get a high-upside prospect for an extended Hanifin. Going to be an interesting couple of months.

Thats what you get if there is an extension or framework for an extension in place. No extension, you're negotiating hard for the 1st.

McLeod seems like a piece a contender would be looking to add at the deadline. I'd prefer that the Flames would go more the prospects & picks route.

Hope not. I look at what the leafs had to give up for O’Reilly as a rental last season as the framework for the Lindholm deal. The leafs traded a 1st round pick, a 2nd round pick, a 3rd round pick (from Ottawa), a B-level prospect (Mikhail Abramov), and Adam Gaudette. That got the leafs Ryan O’Reilly and Noel Acciari. The blues retained 50% of O’Reilly’s cap hit and Minnesota retained another 25% of the cap hit in exchange for a 4th round pick.

We can debate who is the better player but, even assuming O’Reilly is a better player than Lindholm, I still think Lindholm should at least return a 1st round pick + 2nd round + B-level prospect. That’s a more than reasonable price to pay for what most trade boards consider one of the top 2-3 players that will be available at the TDL.

That's why you get teams negotiating amongst themselves. Canucks don't want to pony up a 1st for rental Lindholm? No problem, but what would you think about LA suddenly picking up Lindholm, or the Avs or the Knights?

No extension in place actually makes it easier IMO to negotiate by NOT negotiating. Not every team could take on Hanifin's contract but an expiring Lindholm at 2million cap hit (don't quote my cap numbers, just roughly)? Flames retain or take something back and all of a sudden, every contending team could and rightfully should love to add him for a run. At that point, I'd argue Conroy doesn't have to negotiate with a single team at all, he should play them all against each other.

Just to further the case for the Flames getting McLeod from NJ,

In a direct comparison to Elias Lindholm, McLaeod has one less goal this season, 7 less assists with zero PP1 time.

Outside of points he leads in every category over Lindholm. 1. That's how crap Lindy has been and 2. McLeod is a great piece for any team to add and if the Flames are retooling, that's a brilliant addition.

McLeod is a bottom-six centre. Would be shades of Curtis Lazar 2.0. No interest.

No, that's what Lindholm gets without an extension.

I think he would be a fine player to take back, but I would hope he wouldn't be the only thing coming back, or even the main piece. I hope Conroy wouldn't be valuing him as a former 1st rounder, 12th overall. He is a good bottom 6 player, but not worthy of that pedigree anymore.

On a team of middling forwards that needs to sell off some pieces to get picks or young players with upside, I would hate to use one of our assets to bring in another middling forward that's 26 years old.

Poor move, imo.

I can only assume that Mcleod is being considered as a potential trade target if Dube is being dangled as a piece of a larger and separate Lindholm or Hanifin trade.
