Not the one...
|
Cecil has taken a perfect game into the 7th
Marcum started the season with a no-hitter through 7
Romero took a no-no through 8
Morrow with the heartbreaker today
What a terrific pitching staff.

FFS Aaron Hill was playing pretty deep there, but was probably not his choice. I don't think he had a chance to throw him out even if he caught it cleanly.
EDIT: On a second look he probably would have thrown him out, but nothing he could have done. He dove and that's all you can ask for. Glad he got the strikeout as pitching a one hitter and losing or not getting a decision would have sucked.

Next year you'll have Drabek and Stewart competing for a spot next season too. The future looks bright for these boys.
A lot of publicity south of the border too this weekend, with the 8 home runs yesterday and the almost no-no today. Can't hurt

If you're looking at a pitcher's game score (it's a mathmatical formula that determines how good a performance is)
Morrow's today was 100
Only 4 times (today being the 4th), has a pitcher ever had a game score over 100
Game score = 50 + (1*Outs) + (2*innings after the 4th) + (1*strikeouts) - (2*hits) - (4*ER) - (2*unearned runs) - (1*BB)
Morrow's score from today = 50 + 27 + 10 + 17 - 2 - 0 - 0 - 2
Halladay's perfect game was the highest this season at 98 for a comparison
The last guy to break 100 was in 2004 with Randy Johnson's perfect game.

Man tough luck for Morrow, but whatever, it was a staggering performance from someone who has all the tools to be great.
Exciting times for the Jays.

That was a fantastic game. It's nice to see performances like that to brighten the season. I don't think we will make the wild card unfortunately, but you never know. It's just hard to play 8 games better than any other team with only 50 to go (especially with the Red Sox/TB/NYY battle, Twins/White Sox battle). Either way, this team has way exceeded expectations.

I don't think the Jays will be able to mount much of a threat for the Wild Card, but it's nice to see them win 5 of 6 against the likes of the Yankees and Rays. Who knows though, Tampa's hitting lineup is not that intimidating and if Nieman hits some health problems that will impact their starting staff. Although I think the problem for the Jays may not be running down the Rays, or Red Sox, but the fact that Minnesota and Chicago are waging a pretty good battle. The loser of that Division may end up with the WC spot. You need to pull the Colorado win 21 of 22 to jump over that many good teams in front of you from that far back.
Pretty impressive that the Jays dealt Roy Halladay and DID not get a single guy back who's playing in the majors right now, but still have 4 guys with at least 9 wins on their staff. On one hand you think wow imagine where they'd be if those 4 guys were pitching behind Halladay. But on the other, guys like Cecil and Morrow maybe got a chance to stay in the rotation because they didn't have him at the top end. Hopefully these guys can be healthy and stay on track and a good bullpen eventually emerges behind them.

I was at the game...first live MLB game of my life. Huge Jays fan too.
Watching Brandon Morrow pitch was incredible. Vernon Wells catches a lot of flack for looking disinterested much of the time, but that play was something else. He got a much deserved standing ovation from the crowd too.
Being so close to the 2nd no-hitter in Jays history...I'll never forget it. This team is something to watch.

Jeez, Arencibia just gunned out the runner at 2nd ... it looked like he may have gotten in, but Ellsbury had a huge jump and Arencibia made the throw from his knees.

Drinking game: every time Buck Martinez gets confused.
"And.....iiiiiiiiiiit's.....a fly ball caught at the warning track."
"Arencibia has no chance - oh, and he's out!"

Joey Bats!
ties it up in the bottom of the seventh with a monster shot: his 35th of the season...
3 hrs this game for the good guys, wow who predicted this offense from this team? haha keith law and all the alleged experts were so wrong with this team.
I remember I gave credit to riccardi for his efforts after his release and when the jays were playing well in april and now everybody is doing so when it seems chic to do so. I'm happy he's gone but grateful for what he did. AA is a shrewd dude so I;m happy with the change.
PS, Moon. Remember when you called me on the AL east divisional record thing, saying the NL west was as good? care to change your tune now? the jays have the chance to reach 60 wins before their third and fourth place teams. Plus the yankees are almost at 70. The al east is the best division in baseball, bar none. Poor orioles.
Update: poor jays... the numbers let them down. downs out for camp with 2 outs, camp allows a hr, a single and a double with two outs... merde!

i didn't say the NL West was as good just that the 4th place team was likely to get to 50 wins before the Jays did.
I don't even think the NL West is the best division in the NL.

Fine. Then how about my argument tweaked? If it was that a fourth place team was likely to reach 50 wins before any other 4th place team reached 50. Let's skew it towards 60. the jays have a better chance at reaching 60 wins before any other 4th place team. What separates the AL east is that there are two teams with nearly 70 wins while the 3rd and 4th place teams at nearly 60 wins. The division leaders in the NL west are both at 64 wins. The other two are stuck at 58.
My entire argument was that the division is so stacked that it's a direct disadvantage for the jays. However, I do believe that if they ever do contend, for real, it will be a team forged from the furnace of the AL east.

Agreed. He looked lost on two balls that went over his head. Vernon catches the one in the 8th I believe.

So in both games Aaron Cibia has started, the usually strong pitching staff has given up 11 runs to Tampa and 7 runs to Boston.
I wonder if this trend continues?

I wasn't paying much attention to his catching performance in his first start (I was a little distracted by all the runs), but I thought he called a pretty bad game with Romero. Yes, Ricky missed a couple of spots at key times, but Arencibia didn't set up very well for his pitcher.
