Be honest with him. Tell him to sit in the press box and watch Backs and Lindholm.

A NMC is not a no popcorn clause

But it is a right to cash cheques until they offer him the doctor out clause.

For sure.

Since you’re spending the money, if he’s a net negative on the ice, eliminate it. Can’t afford it. Bring up Zary, sit Kadri, and shuffle things.

At some point, he will have to decide if he wants to help and then they can take it from there

And Treliving was the idiot who gave it to him...at the expense of a 1st and Monahan.

I'd rather have Monahan and that first back.

I still contend that Treliving didnt bail, rumours of his welcome back have been greatly exaggerated.

I think it’s much more concerning than that. I think the Flames wanted him back because they believe he did a good job, and they still believe he did a good job - and that’s why you’re seeing the Flames working on extending these players.

They still genuinely believe in this roster, and that’s a terrifying lack of change in direction given the mounting evidence that they shouldn’t believe in this roster.

Not going to lie, I'd prefer Monahan. Even made of glass Monahan.

And a 1st, and all that cap space? What a dream.

Cheering for this team is torture.

It's just another cautionary tale of free agency. Most of the big fish turn into big busts. Happens every year yet teams continue to make the same mistakes overpaying players for past performance out of total desperation. When you consider what the Flames had to give up to get this contract done, it's one of the bigger debacles in franchise history.

On Kadri:

I know it is not an excuse and his play needs to be better. In his defense, it would probably be a lot easier to get energized for games when you have the likes of Mackinnon, Rantanen, Makar, and Landeskog on the team. They were an absolute contender and before that, he had Matthews and Marner.

Instead, he gets to play with Dube, Mangiapane, Backlund, and the ghost of Huberdeau. Might as well just keep collecting the cheques.

The Flames have no superstar that can help rally a team. They also have no young up and coming player that can take ok that role. That is a big miss at the moment and probably doesn't help the players. Once again, I know there are no excuses when making $7 MM but trying to point out human nature.

I think the new unwritten rule for the Flames when considering a UFA contract is a max term of 3 years. It doesn't matter how good the player is, 3 years is the max. You do well? You get another contract after those 3 years, but the reality is that even if the player does well for those 3 years, they're likely going to be less valuable or on a decline heading into their 30-31-32 year old seasons. Let someone else give them a contract after that.

The problem is there's always one team willing to sacrifice their team on the last 4 years of a deal just to get those first 3 years. It almost always hamstrings the team's cap situation.

Max UFA deal of 3 years. Spend the money on the RFA contracts instead and maybe take a guy to age 32 on one of those RFA deals. You'll likely get a lot more value that way than paying a UFA*.

*Joe Pavelski notwithstanding.

^ I dont disagree on what contracts for older players should look like. But that limit basically takes you out of the upper UFA market. Maybe that’s good, but it’s for sure sadly true.

I totally agree with this stance in principle without a doubt. The market is different for sure these days. I recall when Iginla would only sign 3 year deals for a few years as he thought it was long enough to give both sides their firm commitment. That was what he was comfortable with and these were his best performing years in the league.

When he was the top of his game, a UFA and still in a position to win, he signed for 5 years from 2008-13. What was then considered a players prime.

It's nice to see Monahan doing well so far and it's nice to see Brad Treliving in Toronto

I still think Kadri has the ability to turn it around, We'll have to see if he has the desire.

One thing that does bug me though (besides the Monahan debacle), Kadri didn't sign until Aug 18th, seems unlikely that he had multiple offers. Treliving should have offered 4-5yrs max, if he walks so be it.

Laughable that everyone figures turning Monahan into Kadri was a GM’s decision. The people who orchestrated that are still running the team.
