So when I hear this, I think Shell/Syncrude/Suncor type big camps. Is that accurate?

Yeah, anything up and including Ruth Lake, as well as operations using the Suncor AOSTRA Road.

As of 2:30 p.m. MT, a fire was heading north to Tower Road. At the present time, it is moving 30-40 metres per minute and is 6 kilometres from Tower Road. We anticipate the fire will hit Tower Road in two hours (as of 3:45 p.m.).
This alert affects a number of plants. It includes the camps off of AOSTRA Road, including:
Noralta
- Poplar Creek (Birch)
- Poplar Creek Lodge
- Blacksands
- Baseline
- Mackay River
- Brion Dover
- Brion Ops Corp Camp
- Brion Construction Camp B
- STP Mackay Lodge
- Brion Dover South Base (Thickwood)
- South Pacific Resources

Why isn't this the biggest news right now? Seems pretty under the radar.
edit: I'm confused because Ruth Lake seems to be at the southern edge of the big sites, meaning that they wouldn't be evacuated?

Looks like Suncor is relocating workers, they had them on the news just now.
I'm nealry 100% that Noralta is evacuated, which is somewhat large and serves a few sites. That list should also list Brion Construction Camp A

Satellite:
This thing is growing like crazy. Very close to the mine sites now, though the tailing ponds should provide a buffer. Really need rain to have any hope of this thing being put out.

I am scheduled to fly to site tomorrow morning. There is no change in that front yet. Some folks have been flown out of Horizon again though

Guess it depends on what site you're going to.
This monster has the chance to go right back into town too, predictive winds are showing the wind going WNW, scary situation for sure.

Danielle Smith praises the NDP for how they are handling the fire
Quote:
“Oh, my gosh, it’s night and day,” says former Wildrose leader Danielle Smith, when she compares the Progressive Conservative handling of the 2013 flood with the NDP’s fire response today.
As the MLA for devastated High River, she says, “I wasn’t told anything by the government.
“I had to chase around to their press conferences and then try to tell my people what was going on. They didn’t tell the residents anything either — just that they couldn’t go home.”
Smith says today’s fire communication is “brilliant” by comparison. She praises the detailed public briefings and releases, the extended telephone town halls with evacuated residents, and release of satellite maps and other data.
|
Quote:
Smith is impressed by the trust Premier Rachel Notley shows in Jean, especially after her own shunning at the hands of Alison Redford’s PCs.
“They’ve briefed Brian from the start,” she says. “They’ve shown him the respect and trust of letting him into the city to see for himself. They respected his role as a local MLA and opposition leader.
“As a result of the access, he was the one who first said the city was still 85 per cent intact.”

I spoke to an employee in our company yesterday that lived in Abasands.
He shared the timeline for evacuation and mess that followed.
The fire was one street from him when they got the call. His wife wouldn't leave (fear is a strong emotion), he had to pick her up and put her in the vehicle.
The photos he took during the evacuation are horrible.
He showed me his house on the satellite map. Nothing left.
Really sad and reminded me of the personal angle again.

perhaos this is a dumb question - but is there any chance these tailings ponds could catch on fire? i.e. stuff buring off or something like that?
I could only imagine the cost to companies and insurers if some of these camps and job sites start to catch fire - not to mention the potential environmental mess

No, the tailings ponds won't burn. It's majority clay and water, not flammable materials
