Ah I see, thanks for the clarification. Didn't know that intricacy.
Here's a question for you:
I cleared up to Crota last night in HM, but couldn't down him after several attempts. Can I hop into a normal mode run at the Crota cp (and be eligible for the loot), down him, and then hop back into a Crota HM run for a shot at that loot table?

Yup.
Everything you've done up to Crota you've already received Normal+Hard chances at Hard Mode loot but you can go to normal Crota and try for loot there before hard because you didn't finish hard.
Only exception is Ir Yut where there is only one loot across both difficulties.

Awesome. Crota Normal Mode it is.
I'll be sure to post the shards and energies I get for your viewing pleasure....stupid RNG.
Anduril, what about VOG? I've completed hard mode this week, any value to doing a normal run?

Wow. Props where props are due, that is an incredible gameplay.
He got on quite the roll with the heavy/supers towards the end, but I found his pistol usage at the start to be incredible.
Not much to be said about Last Word / Felwinter's in PVP - that guy has that combo down to a fine science.
I'm good, but definitely not that good.

Hawkmoon*
Also I believe we need a CP Crucible event.
Ahh the PS4 exclusive gun. I don't think xbox gets it until the fall.
I managed to put up a 41 kill 11 death performance in control last night.... good for 8695 points

Does anyone want to help my son and I thru a normal VOG sometime this afternoon. We are at the templar (killing oracals). It's his first run thru a raid.
Can I get some information on the factions? I'm looking online, but a lot of the articles are from Oct 2014 or so, and it appears things have changed.
Once I level up to level 3, do I get a legendary piece of equipment every time I level up again with a faction? It appears it used to be this way, but I'm unclear if that is still the case. I'm trying to decide how much time I devote to factions.
Also, I'm having trouble getting any sort of legendary gear. I'm doing as many bounties as I can, including those in the crucible, as well as doing the daily heroic and other strikes. The only piece of legendary gear I got was doing a raid with a buddy and his clan, where I was basically dragged along as my level was far too low to be effective (level 24). Anything I am missing? I'd prefer to not have someone else drag me through raids / strikes over my head to get good gear; the enjoy the actual gameplay and earning rewards, rather than just have a high level.

Partially correct. You receive a faction 'package' which will contain a random set of loot. Can be anything from a single strange coin, to including ascendant materials, a legendary weapon or armor. The main reason people go for factions is to collect the exclusive shaders/ships that you could potentially get from that package.
For where you are right now, there's two ways of collecting legendary gear short of getting lucky from an engram.
1) Continue to do strikes/crucible and collect those marks. With these marks (and for certain pieces require a commendation as well), you can purchase legendary armor from the vendors like the faction or Crucible/Vanguard. With a couple pieces leveled up, you should be able to hit 27+ easily.
2) From there start doing some raids. It's a little backwards because of how Bungie implemented so while you're now equipped to be able to do the Vault of Glass raid, the gear is technically inferior in terms of the long term. It doesn't give as much light to level up compared to the stuff you can buy. Would still recommend it because you may get an extra piece of gear that you were planning to buy and that could help you get closer to a full set of legendary. Not to mention it's the best part of the game and some of the weapons you can get out of it are still extremely valuable.
Lastly, exotics will be something that you could/should be able to get your hands on soon. These things will stay with you for the rest of your character, and depending on how good they are, perhaps something you'll almost never take off. What class do you play by the way?
Now that would be unique. A raid based around defending as opposed to attacking. Depending how they do it, could be great.
I'm going to be so popular if it is a PVP-style control raid!

Thanks for the information - looks like you used to get the legendary gear with each level, and now its more of a 'luck of the draw' sort of thing. I think I'll still work at leveling up the factions rather than vanguard / crucible.
My class is Hunter, and I prefer the bladedancer subclass right now. The super is awesome during strikes when you get overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Thinking of starting a new character, but would like to go further with the hunter for now.
So for the raids, there is no matchmaking, correct? I'd have to assemble my own fireteam? The only issue there is all the people I know playing are level 30+, so again, I am way under-leveled to play with them. Is there a CP team or something? I'd love to join in with a few other players at my level (24 at the moment, but should get to 25 as I need to level up new gear).

If you like the bladedancer sub-class, I would suggest leveling up the FWC faction. Their gear lends itself well to that skill tree.
I faced the same issue as you when I first started, and still have yet to get a single piece of raid gear. With that said, I'm a lvl 31 and got there by fully leveling the faction chest, gloves, boots, and buying an exotic helm from Xur.
