Calgary Transit for not following city guidelines for providing service?
Does CT have this guideline for new communities? Does there need to be bus service as soon as 1 house gets built?

I find the 302 is horribly inconsistent at the stops I use it at, for some reason. I have to take this bus everyday

From the article:
Quote:
The long fight for transit has been waged in several of Calgary’s newest suburbs, as communities reach the size that city guidelines say warrants a bus route — 500 homes — but the city’s strained budget doesn’t allow it.

bizaro86 posted the answer from the article; I guess the next question is whether the City should be modifying that guideline based on current expansion within the city vis-a-vis capacity of Calgary transit?

What it is and what it should be are definitely two different questions, as you say.
I think it might make sense to provide great service to the areas that have transit, and then expand neighbourhood by neighbourhood as funds become available. Obviously, those buying new homes in new communities might have a different opinion, but if that strategy is laid out in advance then it's fair game, imo.

New protocols about the introduction of service in new communities, including funding options (for example developer funded at first) is being considered in the RouteAhead Plan www.routeahead.ca

From Madman's post, I thought the whole smart card Connect system was being canned. It's still going ahead, the City is simply looking for different suppliers/contractors to implement the system. Whew.

Yeah, sorry - just copied the Herald's headline, which could be read as having the entire thing cancelled.

They should just hire the company that does london's and change the name to the "Prairie Oyster" card and be done with it.

Whats the difficulty with getting the smart card system up and running?
Cant CT look at what other major transit systems in North America are using and pick the one that best fits its needs and implement it? It seems like theyre trying to reinvent the wheel.

I think CT is definitely trying to implement a system like other cities in NA, it sounds like the contractor has simply dropped the ball.

As Calgary Transit was coming to the Smart Card party pretty late, I think they should have gone with a proven service provider. Although Calgary may be different than London and Hong Kong, I'm sure the makers of the Oyster Card and Octopus Card could have adequately customized the Connect card.

Aww FFS - as someone tired of lining up for passes or tickets every month, as well as fumbling around for payment every morning - I'm super PO'ed that this has been delayed. Knowing Calgary Transit efficiency it'll probably be 3 years before something else gets implemented.
Even I knew that the MIFARE system was the way to go from the start...(newer more secure varieties anyways) Even Edmonton got this right....

You'd think at the very least the city could set up their transit ticket validation systems to print the time that the ticket will expire at, and not the time you validated the ticket. I absolutely see no purpose in printing the time you validated it at, except to make you better at adding 90 minutes to whatever time is printed out.

Just taking a look, it seems they did the Presto Card as well. Wasn't there a delay with that system in Ottawa? I think it is the same system they use in Toronto and I don't recall any major delays so maybe it was an exception. If it was, Calgary Transit should seriously look into them. Maybe they can sneak in with Edmonton.

According to that article, Telvent had implemented systems "for cities such as Madrid and Monterrey, Mexico, which like Calgary has buses and a busy light rail network"

It would be interested as to know what the problems with Telvent were.

Specifically the cards were not indicating the proper balance. There may be some other usability issues, but that was the oft quoted reason by Chabot and Nenshi.
They also said the card was supposed be extendable for other City of Calgary usage beyond transit payment, and it sounded like it came up short in that regard.
