Funny thing about that. Seems like it's been an ongoing problem for a while.
 https://calgary.citynews.ca/2024/07/...nfrastructure/
Calgary loses billions of litres of drinking water a year due to leaks, according to a new report.
The report from the City of Calgary indicates that 22 per cent of its water was lost in 2022 — and 88 per cent of it was because of water leaks.
The unaccounted for water that year alone equates to approximately 31.6 billion litres. In Edmonton, only 5 per cent of the city’s water was lost from leaks in 2022, according to the same report.
The CEO of Build Calgary says he’s been writing the city about the problem for some time and highlighted the number in a recent letter.

It's worth noting however that BILD Calgary is a lobby group run by some of the worst possible people you could imagine (land developers and home builders) https://bildcr.com/about-us/2024-202...-of-directors/
I would assume their interest is less altruistic and more about getting that bag

Yeah I'm in the same boat.

My yard is a bit hard, but I left the grass long and it is fine.

I have opted to masturbate before the shower which has been a delightful change of pace.

22% line loss is horrendous. For reference if you fixed even 12 -15% of that you likely gain an extra month of total city water useage during peak summer months. This needs to be addressed.

It's grotesque incompetence at a leadership level. It's ridiculous that resolving this hasn't been a priority.

That's on City Council, Gondek, and Nenshi.

It goes further back, I'd like to say the City of Calgary is unique in this regard but other cities like Montreal that are ruled by the mob have the same issues.

It's why when posters like Bunk prattle on here my eyes roll back so far I can see my ass.

Good Point, I think we should be looking at the city council that was in power when these faulty lines were installed!

KLASZUS: As our drop makes its way through Calgary’s pipes, it may or may not make it to your tap, because of leakage. And leakage is normal in municipal water systems. Calgary loses somewhere in the realm of 20% of its treated water through leakage—but this isn’t entirely unusual.

BLACK: Everyone compares this to oil and gas. In an oil and gas leak, you’d have a response right away. You’d be monitoring the health and safety of the pipe. When oil leaks into the environment, it’s kind of a big deal. But when water leaks into it, no one necessarily thinks of that as a bad thing, because it’s just going back into the environment. So there’s not as much of a concern around leaky pipes, but we definitely have leaky pipes. And it’s a hard thing to estimate. These are all estimates, if it’s 20%, whatever, those are estimates of how much you’re losing in the system.

Across Canada, we're probably looking anywhere from 5%, 10% leakage to some communities having upwards of 50%, 60%. It really varies, and certainly if you spend more time operating and maintaining and inspecting your pipes then you're able to stay on top of that. But it's something that we accept. There's a certain amount of of water leakage within a distribution system that you are okay with, and sometimes, depending on the city, 20%, 30%, 40% they might be okay with.

This has been Gondek's long game plan, I believe it started back in the 90's when she was a high school student. Choke the city of water and bring in the deep state to turn water into rainbows.

Would you say that strategy is working given that 3 years later water loss has increased and every year after that strategy was implemented reports have been flagging concerns on water loss?

A 2020 city report on Calgary’s water treatment and supply mentions that performance indicators “have suggested increasing trends in water loss in Calgary’s distribution network.” The same report states that preliminary investigations indicated the city’s water loss “is significant and requires attention.”

Given how quickly we were able reduce our city water consumption should give people solace.

It also got me thinking that if we really wanted to make drastic changes we could require new houses to be built with two water outtake lines. One for black water (sewage, etc.) and one for grey water (shower, bathroom sinks, etc.). Grey water could go to a tank that could be used for toilets, gardens, lawns, etc. Grey water treatment could be big business. Not sure if this is really cost prohibitive or not but it could solve the demand side.

I would assume their interest is less altruistic and more about getting that bag
