after playing be a gm mode a bit last night i don't mind it. some of the screens can be slow, but the menus are an improvement and resemble madden a bit (trigger buttons to scroll).
i also love the multi-select options for roster management and trades, only issue is you lose the ability to R3 to look up a player when you do that.
also seems trade AI actually looks at player contracts. for example even though engelland matched trade blocks, his bad contract (high AAV and multiple years left) was mentioned as comments when trades were declined by the CPU.
edit lines was a bit clunky, but good adds there include the ability to sub a player for all lines (not sure why this option is only available on special teams). other than the limited online stuff, i don't really dislike the game so far. actual gameplay is improved imo, haven't found any glitch goals yet. computer is patient gaining the zone, if they can't get in they'll circle back to retry or eventually dump, so hard to just crush somebody coming through the blueline. they also didn't give me all day to cycle around the outside like they used to and even though i make good passes, it's not a guaranteed reception (especially on cross creases like previous years) which is more realistic.
EDIT: disclaimer on the gameplay since i only played the LA/NYR game at the beginning. I spent all night trading for elite potential players to see what the growth will be (landeskog, eberle, larsson, fowler, f. anderson, m. foligno, etc)

I did play one full game at one point though I don't know if I tried to go to the main menu afterwards. I will have to play around with it again when I get home today.

It speaks to the lack of attention paid to detail in the game overall...there are a lot of "no big deals" in the game and they add up to a big deal

I was making a really bad joke, since you know, you can't edit players.
I was hoping they'd make it so you could edit everything about a player instead of just their ratings. It would have been nice to be able to change height, weight, contracts, face (for ones who have a generic face that's completely wrong) since lots of that stuff isn't accurate in the game. But I guess taking editting players out altogether is close enough.

Was at best buy to return mine and I saw a couple tall stacks of NHL 15s behind the cash. I asked the girl if those were returns and she said "yip, we've been getting slammed with these since tues" and that hardly anyone has been in to buy.

man in gm mode, the in game stats not only tell me about how my player stats are this season, i don't even see pp/pk percentages for the season (just stats for the game itself).
reminds me of gaming in the 90s.

Yeah, the in game presentation is lacking. I really hate the fact that there are no stats for goals/assists on the year. I can live without that though, as I really like the gameplay.
I'm liking HUT mode so far. Won Div 10 with a record of 4-2 and got to play in Div 9. Currently 4-0 - just need to win one more to win the title and go to Div 8.
My team is currently;
Sobatka - Berglund - Oshie
Fleischman - Bozak - Clarkson
Glencross - Backlund - Monahan
Joensuu - Stoll - Stafford
Seidenberg - Hamilton
Martinez - Greene
Garrison - Stralman
Elliot
Total team chemistry is 92. It's fun to play, though I'm having a hard time scoring. I normally pepper them with 30+ shots, but their goalies are unreal for the most part.

Draft Pick
|
So I played this for the first time last night. The only mode I play is Be a GM. Throughout the season I accumulated and extra 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick. So at the end of the season I had picks 2, 6, 32, 38, 62 and 73. Little did I know that the draft is now completely simmed. After the draft I went to go see who the AI selected using the contracts screen. The AI chose 3 goalies with my first 3 picks!! I was so livid I just shut off my xbone

So far I am really loving this game, it's definitely not complete as i do miss some of the stats plus other nuances that were in past editions but with the game play being so realistic, I'm having a blast playing each game. I'm a big fan of the new menus and once I got used to them found them to be very convenient.
I did make one change how ive played in the past since the AHL players wont be collecting stats, although afterward i did read in OP that they do in fact level up. I ended up turning off the waivers so I've been able to demote/recall whomever i want whenever and so far Gaudreau has played in 3 NHL games getting points in two of them (all assists, lol). The CPU has been signing free agents and the Flyers just made a trade with the Islanders and while i haven't been offered a deal yet, i do keep forgetting to update my trade block.
Even though i have the trading difficulty set to hard, I have been able to deal Backland, Wideman, D.Jones and Stajan for some surprisingly younger players i felt were talented but the game didn't have their projected value set very high in J.Andersson (DET), T.Wingels (SJS), D.Savard (CBJ) and A.Chiasson (OTT). I found the Superstar setting not to be challenging enough until i turned up the AL sliders of Learning, Difficulty Adjustment and CPU Strategy Adjustment. I actually turned those almost all the way up and then reduced the overall setting to All-Star and now whether if i take the lead or i get blown out in the first period, there's always the chance of a come back for either of us.

I picked the game up (and the Xbox One) on Tuesday and wanted to wait to play a bit before I commented on the game. I know I'm not exactly saying anything that hasn't already been said here, but I feel like weighing in anyhow.
This is, relative to contemporary context and the trajectory of the series, one of the worst NHL games produced by this company. I do not get the praise in gameplay. To me, while it looks sleeker, it plays like a clunkier version of previous iterations. The AI is absolutely atrocious. My players rarely follow the play, and when they do they skate right into coverage, which is incredibly irritating. They also go offside way, WAY to much. I never had that sort of trouble in previous games. Defence is essentially crossing your fingers and hoping for the best as they continue to neglect this area of the user experience. We don't have enough or proper tools to play defence and it mostly consists of trying to stay in position and hoping something goes right.
I see that EA continues to compensate for their programming deficiencies by essentially creating a challenging scenario by simply giving the CPU capabilities and advantages unavailable to the user. CPU defenders merely have to be within 3-4 feet of your players to make defensive plays. Passes and shots are stunted for no other apparent reason than the CPU controlled defender is near me. They don't even have to have good position. For example, I magically flub shots when a CPU-controlled player is well behind me and it's physically impossible to make that sort of play on my forward. And if I hit one more post I might scream until my throat caves in.
Not really a fan of the menus or the commentary. I'm sure my frustration with the menus is partly due to my familiarity with the old system, but I really dislike the 'drop-down' style of cycling through options and am more than just a little peeved at the general unresponsiveness (or lag?) of the menu switching. They have also removed the page-up/page-down feature that was so useful. Moreover, the layout of the screens in Be A GM mode are all wrong. They need to re-merge the weekly calender on the main screen and have quick-view access to news, transactions, summaries, etc. The commentary seems stilted and slopped together. It's already getting a little grinding and repetitive. Sometimes change for the sake of change isn't a good thing.
The feature removal goes without saying...but I'll reiterate it anyway. The game feels like a hollowed out husk.
This is a bad game from one corner to the next, and if the only saving grace I had was that the gameplay was improved and enjoyable then I'm a lost soul, so to speak. It's not fun, it has little to no replay value (at this time, anyway), and it's not near the innovative jump to the next generation that it needs to be. This gives me absolutely zero confidence in this franchise going forward.

That sucks... I'm in the middle of my GM hoping that this wouldn't happen because I was reading something along the lines of this... Such disappoint much sadness. Can't even draft McDavid now tanking the season on purpose

yikes.... i'm wondering what that "pinning" concept is. In your scenario, if you had pinned let's say the top ranked Centers in your scouting reports, would that have caused the simulation to pick any of htose guys remaining when your team's picks were selected??
In my scouting view in the mode, the RW is highlighted yellow from a franchise depth chart perspective. If this auto draft was how they intended this to work we would have needed the ability to force the simulator to pick BPA or focus on certain positions (ie. have a weighted average on targetting position or skillset, like scoring, playmaking, size, speed, etc)...
the oct patch can't come soon enough for the draft "enhancements" which really should be read as "Fix".

I take everything back I said about this game. Worst iteration of the game I've ever played. Worse than the demo by a long shot. I wish I could get a digital rebate.
Horrible horrible gameplay. Wow. I can't even list the amount of things wrong with the AI.
