Ya, you can setup the boxes to connect to whatever wifi network you want. I've got my modem bridged and the boxes connected to my Netgear router. Did they not call you? They called me about 6 months ago and sent me free boxes. They really are better than the old setup.

I can confirm what others are saying - bridging is fine. I have my modem bridged and run my everything from my own router. I have 3 ix6 boxes and they are connected to my own network/router - 2 via ethernet and 1 on wifi. No problems.

Seriously? I wish I had known this! I had this whole discussion with a Shaw tech in September and they recommended I do coax to two PVR boxes because "bridging the modem wouldn't allow wifi boxes to the TVs". I got it working but it's far from ideal.

They may have but I tend to ignore calls I'm not expecting.
Ya the setup went quite well. Have the one in the basement hardwired and the other 2 work just fine on WiFi. The unexpected plus was all of our shows that were recorded are on the new equipment. I assumed as they were stored locally, they'd be lost with the new equipment but everything is there.
They are indeed more responsive but a bit surprised they have the same GUI as the old system.

Has anyone had the “pleasure” of renewing with Shaw/Rogers lately? I’m good until November, but they sent me an early renewal offer that was pretty laughable.
I actually find Shaw to be quite reliable, I’ve been with them for ages, and I’d rather not change. But I dread this song and dance every 2 years.
My threat to rage quit is also fairly hollow, as my wife is very attached to her Shaw.ca email address, despite many gentle suggestions over the years to avoid being attached to your ISP for email.
So I know that I’m going to get bent over by Shawgers. The question is when and by how much.

I was looking to switch back to Shaw but Telus gave me a better deal to stay on than Shaw had to come on as a new customer...can't imagine a retention deal will be better lol

I am still dealing with this nonsense from Shaw/Rogers. Since I am trying to avoid issues for myself, parents and technical support, I am trying to avoid moving to this Ignite TV and still have old school cable boxes. My parents won't be able to figure this out with the UI and I can't even begin to deal with PVR'ing their favorite shows.
If the technology legit did not work then I would understand but it's my understanding there is still some runway left on this tech. My mother has vison and hearing issues, she is used to her TV set up. What angers me the most is that if I renew with the Ignite TV, I get a great deal on existing services. If I maintain my equipment, I am $600 more a year. Talk about a financial penalty. This almost seems discriminatory in a lot of ways for older people without any sort of duty to accommodate.

The new equipment is good. You can even manage her recordings from a web browser or your phone, so probably easier to assist. I know training old people is painful, but this should be an easy one.

Try waiting until Black Friday to renew? I have done this the past couple of renewals and it seems to work for me- I pay $130 for Ignite 300mps and total TV package which includes sports channels and a decent amount of others. I also have the newer cable boxes/ PVR but they are coax and not WIFI so they don't use any bandwidth- I had to ask specially for them a few years ago

Just renewed mine and it was fine. New equipment and price didn't change. Same rate we've been paying for the past couple of years.

Yeah - I'm thinking that waiting is best. I chatted with them today and asked if it was worth renewing now, and they basically offered me $200 for what I'm paying $140 for: Internet 300, Total TV, and home phone (my old-ass alarm requires it).
The agent did say that the renewals have been $10-20/month higher typically, and that there is also a new $7/month rental fee for every box after your first one (I have 3), that they are unable to waive. That has been waived/credited in the past on my current plan.
So she just recommended waiting to see what deals come around closer to the date (including Black Friday), but didn't give me a lot of confidence that I'll be able to keep it below the $150 mark.

I renewed last November.
They contacted me in July and told me it's going up by $80 but I can lock in at that point for only a $60 increase (not actual numbers but the increase was indeed high and the lesser price they were offering me was still way too high). I said I have some thinking to do. I had no other option and I was looking into dropping internet speeds to save some money.
They called again sometime in August with the same thing.
I ignored their calls in September and October.
I started a chat call with thim about a week before my expiration and told them I needed to renew. I think I'm paying somewhere around $5 more per month.
So wait it out and you'll get a better deal!
I would hate to go to Telus because they screwed up my mother-in-law's plan and wouldn't do anything to fix it. They screwed up my mother's plan and wouldn't do anything to fix it. I don't trust Telus but they are finally putting fibre in my neighbourhood so I know I have an alternative if Shrawgers becomes too expensive for me next year.

After looking at my Shaw bill for probably the first time ever, it appears I'm paying an extra 10 bucks a month for a modem rental since being off contract (which I have been for about 2.5 years)
Probably time to look into this lol

Pretty sure it was an October renewal so a couple of months. Normally I would have waited but my equipment was dying.

Update: Seems if you go up the chain to senior executives, highlighting ethical and legal concerns with legit discrimination on Rogers part, the so called technology challenges within the "system" and not discounting traditional TV go out the window.
Magically somehow a nice discount of $120 per month for a total price of $140+ tax is allowed and a 2 year contract renewal. Full cable tv, 1 Gig internet, Sports/ Crave/HBO and a multicultural channel.
The song and dance is over for now and hopefully my parents existing equipment for traditional TV can continue to operate as long as possible.
This Rogers/Shaw buyout should never have been allowed to proceed, enough cash envelopes were exchanged for the proper people to sign off. I hate that we have to do these types of things in order for the ability to have some basic services and communication in Canada.

I am in this same boat. I got a letter today stating that my current setup (main PVR and two slave boxes in the basement) must be replaced by Sept 30. We have a relatively basic TV package and 500 internet. I think it is asinine BS, there is nothing wrong with these things.
What exactly did you do to maintain your setup?

It appears your in Calgary? I am as well. Speaking with a senior executive this afternoon, I was able to get a 2 year contract renewal for the above price of $140+ for pretty much the full package of everything I described.
This account is in relation to my parents account and their lack of ability to learn the new technology along with a few other reasons.
Old school traditional TV is on limited life in Canada and the changes are happening in different areas at different times. I asked point blank if we have an official end of life date in Calgary and was told no but it's happening.
They made it clear that this 2 year contract rate could change if I needed new equipment in the future.
I would be shocked if I was able to keep the existing set up for 2 years but I remain hopeful.
Did you get an actual letter in the mail? Or an email to the account?

You did better than us. We had to call to report a problem. If we had been getting paper receipts we'd have known our old Motorola system was going to be phased out. Ended up getting a little bit better package with new equipment for the same price. Not looking forward to next year.
