They have to throw around phrases like "practical effects" and other code words because just coming out and stating, point blank, "Don't worry, we're not going to screw this up like Lucas did the prequels" wouldn't be politically correct.
They also wouldn't say that, because they're all obviously huge Star Wars fans. Fans of at least the original trilogy, making more Star Wars movies for Star Wars fans.
Pretty cool video, I was making the light saber sound as I walked to the fridge to get a drink.. the kid in me is awakening.

I'd prefer they let the results speak for themselves as opposed to running around yelling "Practical Effects!!" at every chance. but it's really important to how this whole thing turns out. way too many times in the prequels it's obvious that Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen and everyone else are just standing in the middle of a featureless green screen hell, not really sure what they're supposed to be looking at or how to react. the result is tons of scenes that are just lifeless and unrealistic not because of the quality of the CGI, but because you have Obi Wan standing in front of a madly lightsaber twirling General Grievous like 2 feet from his face, and not even reacting a little.
it's like McGregor's incredibly cringe-worthy line "how did this happen? we're smarter than this!!" wasn't actually in the script, but rather was an ad-libbed commentary on the whole movie making and viewing experience.
I feel pretty confident that the new movies will be quite good, based on Abrams' treatment of Star Trek.
However, I feel pretty certain that high-profile fans were also going ga-ga over the prequels as well before they were released, so Kevin Smith's endorsement at this time doesn't mean much. It's hard to gauge really, at one time I would have thought that Harrison Ford signing up meant it was going to be a solid movie, but he went and did Indiana Jones 4, which really lowered my opinion.
shown at comic con, was hoping for a new trailer but this is so so so so so much better
Looks awesome! I cannot recommending going to Comic-Con enough for those that have never been. It makes all the other conventions pale in limp comparison.
Ironically speaking of Kevin Smith, he kinda got screwed over by Star Wars yesterday with that concert. Not sure if anybody was even left for his panel.
Agreed, listening to Kevin Smith talk about anything, particularly listening to Kevin Smith talk about Kevin Smith (which is what he does 95% of the time (did you know he directed Clerks?!?!)), makes me regret being able to hear.
It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out one of his personal pleasures is farting in an echo chamber
I'm looking forward to the new trilogy, but for me the hard part for me is having a villain of the level of Palpatine and to an extent Vader.
Even with the Prequel trilogy having its weaknesses and it does, Palpatine to me was a great character and villain, even when he was under the guise of the kindly senator who loved democracy.
Vader was a villain who promptly turned into a bit of a pathetic and tragic figure who had given up on himself and the world and just went with evil.
The Villains really drove the first two trilogies. I would even give a shout out to Christopher Lee as Dooku and Maul in the pm who did a great job or portraying evil.
I hope that Kylo Ren and whoever the other villain is follow the same kind of strength of evil.
I also hope that the rumored big bad behind the New Order, isn't something from the past EU or the past movies.
My biggest hope is this isn't another rise of the Sith, I love the Sith, but in my mind if they bring then back so quickly then they're basically pooping over the ending of the original trilogy.

My big hatred of the EU was the constant over powering of the use of the force and how powerful they made the Solo brats and the Skywalker kids.
Suddenly the force went from something that could throw some objects around and opening doors and being faster and able to see into the future to something that could push entire Star Destroyer fleets out of systems, to crashing star destroyers, to making stars explode.
The force became the ultimate solution to ultimate victory for the hero's.
That's why my hope was that the use of the force and the battle between the Jedi and Sith wouldn't be the core battle in this movie.
I do kind of like the idea that I've heard that Luke didn't reconstitute the Jedi Order and have hundreds of Jedi running around the gffa.
I tend to think that the idea of bringing balance to the force was not only the destruction of the Jedi order, but also the end of the Sith line.
To me, Palpatine was probably the most powerful force user in all of the movie canon, and Yoda was pretty equal to him, but what made Palpatine special was that he was just a cunning and devious politician, he was basically the devil. Yoda was powerful as well but he was the trusting naif who didn't see that the guy swinging the axe in the end was a guy that acted as if he was a faithful friend of the Jedi.
In other words Yoda was almost like the Christ figure and Palpatine was the devil with the angelic mask.
It was a great battle.
What my hope is for this new movie is that the Sith line and the Sith power is dead, the thousands of years of gathering knowledge and power under the rule of two are completely gone, if someone wants to take up the true mantle of Sith Lordship, the journey is gathering the power and knowledge, something that wouldn't happen quickly. So frankly any dark side user in this new movie would be in terms of comparison to Vader and Palpatine be relatively weak but growing, maybe untrained force users using the new order to gather and steal artificacts and information.
Luke on the other hand seeing how the battle between light and dark side is utterly destructive and never ending and he's refused to train jedi and withdrawn from the galaxy and in his exile has gathered and is guarding all knowlege for the light and dark side.
So it becomes a different kind of battle where the dark side users are seeking this knowledge and information in following the axiom that the Sith gain understanding through power, where the Jedi gain power through understanding.
The battle between the rebels since they haven't won the galaxy yet, and the New Order is almost a side show and distraction.
Which means at some point this movie becomes a battle between Luke and these dark side users (Kylo Ren and the other dark lord that they've hinted with) Luke ultimately is forced to train jedi for the battle, and at some point you can have that hand off where Luke becomes the Ben Kenobi and the fate of the Jedi and the light side are handed off to the next generation.

First time being excited since the announcement of the Old Republic (mixed feelings now.. not all bad, I assure you) and also since the 6th installment. Incredible casting, really have a good feeling about these films.
I want to feel alive again watching these and I truly think I will feel that.
Star Wars is the best lore out there. I cannot wait.
