I would NEVER draft a high school prep player with a first-rounder. That said, this kid is said to have high-end speed, good work ethic, and a well-rounded 200-ft game. Plays with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, too. Kinda middling stats for a 23 yo NHL draftee, though. Maybe he would make a good bottom-6 player in the NHL....

Jeremy Roenick was drafted out of US high school.
As was his high school line mate Tony Amonte.

Yeah, I don’t think the High School circuit is as viable today as it was back then. The USDP is a very good junior league these days for American kids.
Amonte wasn’t first round though. The fact you had to go back to 88 to find a really good example isn’t really a winning point.
Now there are some more recent examples: Hayes, Bjugstad, Nelson, come to mind.
Wierd, all 3 of those guys were drafted in 2010. I didn't remember that. I still think the USDP is where you look for American kids these days in the first round.

Yeah it is basically an all star team of kids that have gone through these elite programs. You'd have to be a late bloomer or find a parent who objected to sending their kid away to Michigan for hockey at 16 or 17. There are only 30 or so kids in the USDP so you certainly could find some exceptions each year.

To a lesser degree, I would put the USHL in the same category, which is of course, a much larger pool of talent than just the USDP on it’s own.
