It's not a case of one side wanting long or short and the other not. It's about the dollars and terms being very different for both sides under either scenario.
They will settle somewhere in the middle with a 2 year deal I bet.

Ya, it is hard to give him big dollars and big term based on how little he has shown thus far.
A short contract where he is still RFA at the end makes sense for both sides so he can show what he is capable of and better gauge where he should land for the long term contract. That would be nice because then you could try to keep him in the org for ~9 years (2 yr bridge + 7 yr extension).
I assume that he doesn't go UFA at 25 because his ELC slid twice... so a 1-2 year deal should work. Walking him to UFA would be bad, so avoid whatever term does that.
6 years at $5M would be an interesting offer. Kinda like the last Andersson contract they are paying him for what he has shown thus far and gambling he will play above the contract's value. Then at 29 he would go for his big payday.
I would also be willing to do 8 years at $6-6.5M. There is still risk to the Flames that he doesn't pan out because of injuries but the reward could be a top 6 forward on an excellent contract until he is 31. I expect he wouldn't want to do that but the risk/reward is there for both sides.

Wait so he signed?
Is he still on the market or do titles just not get updated?

From what I understand he still wants out. He is definitely in the market still. This just avoided arbitration at a number that's very trade friendly. So much for the only sign for $9M rumour

Yeah signed a 2 year deal worth 6.25 per that walks him to UFA. Not sure about how on the market he is, can an extension be negotiated now or does that have to wait? If it can't that would be quite a gamble to trade for a guy who's going to be on team 3 and also can be UFA in a couple years.

I feel like the 9M rumour was for a long extension, not a bridge that takes him to UFA the fastest. I would hope the flames are far less interested now given his current contract.

Guessing this makes him untradeable this year, and next year, a team can trade for him with a negotiated extension in place.

I really think that NHL GM's will see his new contract as a big plus, and it makes him more tradeable. Sure, it walks him to UFA, but it's a very team-friendly number for the next two seasons.

Ironically, this is when some posters here feel that Anderson was the MOST tradeable, before he had any influence on who he’d sign an extension with. Who knows?

Maybe the offers weren't to Buffalo's liking and the teams that were interested didn't want to give Byram his 9M asking price.
By signing Byram for 2 years, it allows him to potentially have a big year next year and fully establish himself as a top pair D, therefore increasing his trade value significantly and also gives the acquiring team incentive to extend him long-term at his 9M asking price.
Win for Buffalo in getting a return they want, win for Byram for cashing in, and win for the acquiring team knowing they've locked up a legitimate top pair D long term.

Sarcasms aside, yes this is a good deal if you were looking to move Byram as an asset and knew he didn't want to be in Buffalo. I like the signing from their perspective. Not everything needs to be a "gotcha" on your perceived "other side" of hockey opinions. There's way more nuance than that.

I can't imagine anyone is trading for him for 2 years, since he hasn't really established himself as a top dman. Or, if traded, for a much less return.
I doubt he's traded until next year now, due to the risk of him walking to UFA.
He'll have all the leverage after next year regarding whether he'll sign an extension or not.

I confirmed this at Post #934.
How's everyone's summer going? Hope not too many were waiting around for a Byram deal instead of enjoying their time in the sun!

This place would be better if there were no threads and no gifs. And depending on who you ask, if 95% of the board was banned. Actually it would be ideal if it was just a news feed with no need for annoying conversation, specifically full of news that’s been confirmed. Yes, just a site where you can go and read confirmed news about hockey.
It’s kind of shame nothing like that exists.
