Only thing I’m disappointed in is Conroy’s impatience. I think this deal or something very similar is at the very least still available Friday. Only, I feel like waiting would increase the odds of obtaining a better package.

Toffoli was sneaky good.
Zadorov was in line.
Lindholm was a home run.
Tanev was on the lower end. I would have preferred the Colorado offer.
Hanifin on the lower end of what I thought he’d get by another pick or prospect.
|
…. How do they decide it exactly?

To the disappointment of some here, my guess is some of those 1st rounders will be spent before the Flames use them on a pick, never mind subsequent rounds.
This Hanifin trade should've gotten another decent pick or another roster ready players at least. Tanev IMO should've had that other pick from Dallas be guaranteed.
Vancouver, you had Rutherford so happy he got extended, he got too excited to be able to make a splash on all star weekend, overpaid, and is regretting it even now 5 weeks later.

Vegas was never going elsewhere, they got him for a song. Who were they going to pivot to? Hopefully Conroy gets better at the game.

This is why the defenders of this trade throwing shade at the rest of us are embarrassing themselves by deluding themselves into liking it, solely because "there could not have been a better offer"
Maybe as of right now. But that doesn't account for the additional two days of mounting pressure.
|
The pinch point hits both sides.
Buyers start to come off the market and you are left with less of a return.
It's an unknown but one would expect Conroy had a good sense of the market and the chances of someone else stepping up. Frankly it sounds like that is what happened today with Vegas, and they made a better offer than Florida/Tampa.
Waiting for deadline day under the assumption that it is when you maximize return is a big risk.

Have the Flames been investing in our scouting team? Or is it the same crew of scouts from 2000 still?

Or he waits, Vegas makes a deal for a different defenseman and Conroy is stuck holding dick.
The price then goes down with less teams in the mix.

Hanifin returned a Conditional 2025 1st, Conditional 3rd, and Miromanov
Not that different TBH

DeBrincat is a better player but the returns are similar.

Technically true as of now. Vegas 1st is the 25 pick

Especially with this years theme of 3rd team retention. #### takes time.
Everyone forgets Froliks deal blowing up, and Cammalerri’s value not increasing at deadline day; I guess.

This year we have Vancouvers and ours. We'll have 2 in one of 2025 or 2026 depending on which pick goes to Montreal and which Vegas pick we get.

You cheer for Vegas to beat Edmonton, Dallas and Vanvouver to meet in the WC final with Dallas beating Vancouver to Advance to the final before losing to the team from the east (unless that team is the Leafs).

I think if going off as only a rental, how many teams can't fit in a 1.2 mill Hanifin? We only really heard about the 3 or 4 teams he was happy to extend with but we didn't hear about the pure rental demand which you'd think would be a handful of other teams on top.

Your entire premise is that the time delay will work in our favour ? No basis in reality.

You know, I looked back at my own posts from 6 hours ago. And I said 2 things, a 2026 pick is almost better because they already have multiple in the next two years, it gives you more chances to move around the drafts, pick your guys and not take guys you've under scouted, and it spreads out your high end ELCs more. And i said a 1st a 3rd and the teams 4th best prospect.
It seems likely we are getting the 26 pick, a 2nd and the teams 6th best prospect (although a little older than ideal). So pretty damn close to what I was asking for, the retention just digs a little for the underwhelming return.

Why would there be any guarantee that a team would pay more or even be in the market for Hanifin on Friday? I am not even sure a dman was their top priority would seem to me that a forward would be a higher priority given their injuries and how strong their backend is.
