I really enjoy Barnburner because it represents me as a Flames fan.
I want to see the Flames win. I want to see the Oilers lose. I want to hear about Darryl Sutter stories from the early 2000's.
- I don't study analytics, so Pinder is like a buddy who fills that knowledge gap for me.
- I didn't play for the Flames, so Rhett is "old time story guy".
- Boomer is the sports broadcast lifer who brings it together. And cranky (like me).
- They have amazing guests. Noodles, the Silver Sausage, D.D. Wish they had more of Krahn, more of Stephen Brunt, and could get Eric Duhatschek in there.
You can't remove any one element and have anything close. When Boomer isn't on, Pinder just blabs non-stop and Rhett falls asleep. When Pinder isn't on, the energy level is like 80% lower. When Rhett isn't on there won't be any random interruptions of half dressed Rob Ray weeding the lawn.
Yes, Pat Steinberg is a great resource for more in depth Flames coverage... but he's also super positive all the time, which grates on me (again...cranky) when the team sucks, and there are limited blue chip prospects. I'm sorry, Matthew Phillips was never going to make it, and it was stupid to keep pumping his tires.
Finally - Nacho talk. Skateboard accident videos. Gator attacks. Open attempts to make Boomer throw up on the show through disgusting foods. Old man bitching about idiot kids, local construction, the weather, the municipal government. Members of the podcast actively drunk on camera.
Yes.
Don't want or need it all the time... but break up the day a bit. Give me a couple cheap yuks just like my buddies would. I know it's coming, it lightens my mornings.
This isn't a perfect podcast. I skip over NFL, CFL, MLB, NBA, and soccer talk. It's a podcast after all so you can do that easily. Gambling is super brutal on families IMO. Boner pills, fake diamonds, and local bars are the level of sponsors. Hope that changes (or grows into something else).
But it's still pretty much perfect "for me". Cranky old Flames fans who chuck back the occasional wobbly pop looking for realistic franchise opinions and yucks.
Come to think of it... it's kind of like CP...

Pat is negative Nancy compared the role that Derek assigns himself on the Flames Talk round table.

I am biased as heck and will not apologize for it, but I think Pinder, Rhett and Dean are the only people that could do the show they're doing as well as they're doing it.

If there is a lull in the conversation can you spend some time explain your love for David jones back in the day? Never understood it. Maybe it’s a full length feature for another time.

It really is the perfect show for me. Some honest Flames talk and a lot of hilarious nonsense. Haven't missed a show yet. I feel like the show is just now hitting it's stride, it just keeps getting better and better.
I am so excited to listen to their interviews again this summer. Those were a highlight for me last summer, they were so good. Boomer and Pinder's interview with Conroy from last week was fantastic. Keep up the great work buddies!

I don't have time for slander of anybody else in media – doing anything in the sports media space is challenging as heck – but I think the toughest thing for a lot of folks, especially early on, is figuring out their lane and voice. These guys Get It.

100 percent.
The degree of difficulty in their lane too is so high. Doing hard analytical analysis and having the approachable casual 'nacho talk' vibe. They way they understand themselves, their personas, each other. It's truely something to behold.
We're so damn lucky as Flames fans to have them in the market.

I thought Ball and Millen were even better together.
A lot of untapped potential there as a full time duo cut too soon.

I literally could not agree more with all of this, great write up my friend. I will only add how amazing if feels when Pinder uses a video I've sent him on IG and it actually makes Boom & Rhett wholeheartedly laugh out loud
😊

Definitely agree with this.
I'm a fan of their podcast to the point I chose to become an advertiser. I find all this compensation discussion interesting, I've never though about how much they earn as an income from the podcast but I'm going to assume it's enough to make the model sustainable and to call it a hobby is a disservice to how much work is put into the show. I think the 'we're just 3 morons, can't believe you guys listen to us' is a schtick that they have succeeded in. These guys are pros and excellent at what they do.
The negativity toward the ad reads they do is always funny to me. The same people who say we're so happy to have them on air, are the same that complain they have to do ad reads.... how else would they be on air? lol
At least this form, it's mostly organic, casual and not 5 minutes of radio ads. You can always fast forward too. I think the difference is unless it's a giant corporate advertiser, they actually have personal experience or relationships with their advertisers. Had a guy tell me he recognizes the name of my store from BB, but said would never shop with any of the advertisers because it's so annoying. Blew my mind... probably an oiler fan.
