Because Brad Treliving. For some reason Treliving has a strange relationship with draft picks and how he values them. Also, Lazar was dealt when he was 21 and still had that new player smell on him. Treliving still believed there was untapped potential there. Sam Bennett is 24, so that untapped potentional is pretty much non-existent. When you add in the fact that Bennett comes with a price tag of $2.55M and has to be qualified at the end of the year to retain his rights, and could cost you a protection slot, the negatives start to pile up.
So what do you expect to get back for a 24 year old that scored 12 points last season, is on pace for six points this season, comes with a substantial price tag for what he brings to the table, must be qualified at the end of the season in a flat cap world with expansion on the horizon?

A day later, no trade, and the team came off arguably their worst performance of the season. I guess Ward showed Bennett who's the boss. So with important games coming up against the Oilers and Jets (again) this cloud is going to continue to linger over the team until Bennett is moved. This has the feeling of one of those seasons where everything just goes off the rails.

Yeah, this is on Tree now. Get the trade done.
Unfortunately at the same time, his team is a wreck. Forward depth is garbage, forwards are underperforming, team as a whole is playing casual and uninterested.
Also, if Bennett comes back into the lineup at this stage? It’s a complete joke.
Clearly he isn’t a difference maker in the teams opinion, and if Ryan is out, why bother bringing a non-factor back into the lineup? No way Benny should be in the lineup on Saturday. It’s over. Move on.

Our GM isn't as good as people around think...
Daryl, trade away all our 1st and 2nd rounders, sutter at least got some good players in when trading all that draft capital. We've got guys like hamonic, Lazar to show for it.

I wonder if they could get Mike Mcleod out of Jersey.
Speed to burn and a right shot forward, also a former high 1st rounder who hasn't taken the league by storm.
Although I see he's off to decent start this year so far.

What would people think if Bennett is back in the lineup tomorrow?
How does that impact people's perceptions of the people managing this team?

I think it would be a joke.
Treliving needs to do his job, and do it at a better than below-average level...although my confidence in his ability to get it done is low. He’s been a poor general manager for a number of years in a row at this stage.

I don’t get the joke line of thinking at all? Bennett coming in on a Saturday night in a physical battle against our biggest rival. Seems like a great opportunity to showcase the player

Wasn't Lazar only 20 or so when the Flames acquired him?
Maybe since he was so young, the potential was still kind of there.

I thought it part of a plan. make him sit against the jets to get him fired up to kick ass against the Oilers.
If so, hope it really backfires.

They didn't even have him take the pre-game skate. They shuffled him off to skate with the taxi squad. He's off the team at that stage in my eyes.
If this team thinks playing mind games like that with their own players is a good idea, they're more lost than I think they are.

Now that they are heading back to alberta, I wonder if they just send him home.

You conveniently forgot about Dougie Hamilton.

No chance, Flames will continue to manage the roster as normal
If Bennett is not traded in the next day or so, I would not be surprised to see him in the line up against the Oilers.

I don't see it as a huge problem to insert him back in the line up. He was benched. For one game. That is what the Flames said at the outset.
It would be better to make the trade sooner rather than later, but no need to rush it if the offers aren't there.

Friedman was on 960 this morning, and his view was that the Flames should tell Bennett to play and play well. Elevate his trade capital and he will get his trade wish. This was just an opinion and not insider info, but an opinion I agree with (unless there is a problem with him in the room, which I don't think is the case).

Huge problem here? No one on the team is playing well outside of Monahan and Gaudreau. How is Bennett supposed to be this shining diamond amongst all the muck?
