I would... I doubt the Canucks would.

Johnny is signed for two years... Schmaltz is signed for six at under $6 million. And he's three years younger.
Not calling Schmaltz a better player but he plays a premium position and has a great contract. That substantially raises his value.
Arizona would have to add, definitely. But maybe not as much as you might think.

Can’t get behind this one Scorp.
Schmaltz is inconsistent and weak defensively. He’s a fine player to have, but he’s not a target when you’re trading Johnny Gaudreau

You're right, Schmaltz can be streaky but he's just so skilled. And he's been a positive presence for the Coyotes defensively looking at his HockeyViz heatmaps, but those aren't the be-all and the end-all. I think his offensive ceiling is a lot higher than he's shown in Arizona... that team isn't exactly renowned for bringing out offensive talent.
I just love the package of attributes he brings. Such great skating and lateral movement coupled with a fantastic shot. He has such a polished game.
I think it would be funny if Calgary signed Hall from Arizona and turned around and traded them Johnny for, say, Schmaltz and Soderstrom.

And just like if Hall doesn’t resign with them, they won’t want to blow assets on another player that is eager to leave via free agency.

While Johnny is a better player, what would be Arizona’s motivation to trade The cost controlled for many years Schmaltz for 2 years of Johnny?
I can’t see Johnny staying in Arizona.

^ That's probably true... I was just thinking of it from the standpoint that Arizona might need to make swings to remain viable as a franchise and retain their fanbase. That's why they did the Hall trade.

I like a couple of players on the Coyotes, Schmaltz among them. Fischer stands out as a breakout candidate as well. And Jan Jenik is going to be good.
They have the pieces to get Johnny, but I just don't see it in division.

I saw a Coyote fan over on that other board propose Monahan and Bennett for Schmaltz and Keller.
Keller has kind of stagnated, but he's still just 21. Plus he plays RW even though he's a left shot IIRC.
And then Schmaltz is a downgrade on Monahan but he's still pretty good, a right hand shot and only 23, so room to grow for sure.
Both guys are overpaid but signed to long term deals that could easily turn into bargains if they start producing more.
Gaudreau - Schmaltz - Keller
Hall - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Deadly top 6, but that's stretching the cap pretty thin.

I don't like Keller's contract at all. Wouldn't have any interest in him.

Well, he's better than Schmaltz so that's kind of weird. Haha

Hard disagree. Schmaltz is better, cheaper and plays centre.

Gaudreau has a modified NTC in his last year, just throwing that out there, I think it was a 6 team list he'd allow a trade to.. if we trade him, we should trade him this year

$1.3 million cheaper. He's a center sure, which is good, but he's not better, we're definitely not going to agree on that.
Keller's offensive output at every level dwarfs Schmaltz's and he's already played more NHL games than Schmaltz despite being 2 years younger, because he made the NHL as a 19 year old and put up a 0.8ppg season at that point.
It's just a matter of time before he's a point per game offensive dynamo IMO.

Well, I can respect those who can agree to disagree. I just see Keller as a perimeter player. Not nearly in Johnny or Marner's league. I think he has a bit of Thomas Vanek in him but without the frame... I don't know if that's a particularly effective player.
I think Schmaltz drives play a lot more. And his shot is downright elite.

That will only interfere with trading him if he wants to be a dick and put Philly, New Jersey, Rangers, Isles, Bruins and some other eastern teams on his no trade list, because if the Flames wait to trade him those will probably be the main players trying to acquire him anyways.
You're not gonna see some obscure team outbidding every one to get him when they know he's going to sign in Philly/NYR/Jersey anyways.

I think you have it backwards, it's not a no trade list, it's a list of 5 select teams he'll waive the NTC for..
"2021 Modified No Trade Clause: 5 team trade list"
https://www.spotrac.com/nhl/calgary-...audreau-14375/
whereas Monahan's page lists 8 teams as "no trade"

I don't know enough about these Arizona players, but when is the last time one of their prospects worked out? Turris?
The ones the left before they signed in Briere and wasn't it Wheeler?
Hard pass on anything from them, reminds me too much of the Stajans and Toronto outcasts.

Yeah I got that.
So if he wanted to be a dick, he'd put Edmonton, Vancouver, Vegas, Anaheim and San Jose on his "trade list" meaning the Flames couldn't trade him, because they won't trade him to those teams.
But if he's smart, and wants to go back closer to home a year sooner, he would put Philly, New Jersey, Rangers, Boston and one other eastern team on his trade list. That way he goes closer to home one year early and can also get an 8 year deal from one of those teams, instead of just 7.
