No, I haven't read Coming Apart, but I was forced to read The Bell Curve for a graduate poly-sci class, then for some reason started down the same rabbit hole with Murray by starting Losing Ground, but stopped after a few chapters.
|
So you haven't read the book, and really have no familiar with the guy's work generally, beyond reading his worst book. Coming Apart is a fairly good attempt to rectify some of the mistakes found in Bell Curve. Mainly, as he eliminates race as a variable! Classic problem of ad hominem. Instead of engaging directly with his arguments, you sideswipe him the accusation of racism! I have no idea whether or not Murray is a racist, and it doesn't impinge on the arguments made in his most recent book. I am beginning to get an idea as to what type of graduate student you were.
You are right. I haven't made a concerted effort to really say anything beyond a handful of fairly trite observations. That said, there are a lot of factual and theoretical problems with your post. Give me a few days. I have the weekend free. I am going to return to Coming Apart, do a little extra reading on the Trump/Sanders issue, and give a full-scale rebuttal on Tuesday or Wednesday. Sound good?

Trump beating all Democrat candidates according to the latest SurveyUSA poll (which by the way, is rated an "A" by Nate Silver's website)

"I think a lot about the Department of Energy, because energy is my baby, oil and gas and minerals, those things that God has dumped on this part of the Earth for mankind's use, instead of relying on unfriendly foreign nations for us to import their resources," Palin said.
"And if I were head of that," she said of the department, "I would get rid of it."

Right now you have the Tea Party set in lather over him while the rest of the country couldn't pinch a loaf over politics. For crying out loud. The Iowa caucus isn't for another five months! The first Dem primary is three weeks after that! Hell, Super Tuesday isn't for six months, and that's when things get interesting. No one is even thinking politics except those who have FNC on 24x7. Once people start paying attention, and actual candidates are being vetted, we'll see how he does in the polls. As with everything else The Donald does, he's nothing more than a media fabrication and living off cause celebre.

For starters oil and mining need to have all the subsidies removed that cost the government and taxpayers billions every year.
Invest those subsidies into solar or something if the government thinks it HAS to spend it.

I wouldn't be so sure. He has two things going for him. No need for big donor money, and a frustrated voter base. Both could be enough to help him win.
He is a blowhard, of that there is no doubt, but at least he isn't bought and paid for by corporate America.

We are over a year away from the general election- pretty much ALL of the candidates have no platform detailed so far. At least Trump has outlined his immigration policy.

New Era is acting like a populist candidacy has never won the candidacy, let alone the presidency. Lack of a platform at this stage is irrelevant. What is important is how casually he dismisses his opponents as ineffective.

Trump will not spend a cent of his own money during this campaign. Any money he spends early will be recouped on the back end. Trump got to where he is on other people's money. Trump will see this an opportunity to make a whole bunch more money on the backs of people who can't afford to give up that money. His Super PACs will fill up with cash from those frustrated Tea Party voters, and some very well off individuals, but at some point the cold harsh reality of him not having any understanding of politics or foreign affairs is going to make the people that matter abandon him. If Trump survives to Super Tuesday I will be shocked.

Well he does have corporate support behind him in many of the products he promotes, like his clothing line, and golf courses, but that appears to taking some hits. What is interesting is he's reportedly connected to the mob, and it is unlikely that he or those associations will want those connections probed during the vetting process. He also has connections to some pretty sketchy characters from other countries as well, like Anar Mammadov. It is very hypocritical of Trump to make some of the statements he has considering his foreign investments and business partners. The most important thing is the Koch brothers do not support Trump and refuse to see him as a viable candidate. Without out their money and blessing it is going to be tough to get the support at the primaries. Plus, Trumps negatives, 57 percent within his own party, make him unelectable. The early swell of populist support rarely lasts when the big boys start playing politics. Nuts to Trump?

Bernie Sanders' platform is pretty simple: "vote for me and I'll give you free stuff."

Trump's unfavorability is 80% in non whites. All things aside, that's ruinous for any candidate. Worse yet, he's changing the tone of the Republican nomination back to what they're trying to avoid

I didn't think that the last group would be better than this go around, but at least Romney seemed semi-competent even though I disagreed with almost all his positions. You would think that anyone this go around would be better than someone that earned the moniker Mitt the Twit (London trip).
Rand Paul - Seems like the people around him are tied up in illegal activity
Chris Christie - Same as above
Rick Perry - Glasses do not make people smarter.
Carly Fiorina - Was so bad at her job at HP that it nearly destroyed the country.
Ben Carson - A surgeon that only got notoriety for attacking Obama while being black.
Lindsey Graham - Decent person, but no charisma and no chance.
Bobby Jindal - Sure......
Jeb Bush - The first one started a war in Iraq, the second started another war in Iraq. Is there any doubt that he would start a third one. Plus he's the least personable and most dorkish of the three.
Scott Walker - Bad management of Wisconsin is biting him hard lately.
Marco Rubio - Would be perfect as a candidate if he only had a brain.
Donald Trump - The least republican candidate but he is a loudmouth and that is more important to those supporting him
John Kasich - The even more boring and less compelling version of Mitt Romney.
I'm sure I forgot a few, but there really isn't anyone that seems like a good choice at all.
