I would accredit a part of this to to massive transfer from sedans to SUV's and Trucks and primary commuters.

I’m not really sure that has a lot to do with it. Edmonton uses less and has significantly worse roads (they have to repair 20-30x more than Calgary) while salt is used significantly more in Southern Ontario and potholes are less of an issue there than here.
Double the population, worse freeze/thaw cycles, and everybody bitching about taxes only to turn around and bitch that the things taxes pay for aren’t keeping up all probably contribute more than the salt mix.

I’ve gotten into distance running recently ish. 2 days ago I finally hit a 5k run! Pretty proud of myself for makig that kind of progress in a pretty short time.
My legs were pretty tired yesterday so I thought I’d go for a 2k run with a faster pace then I usually would go. This shorter run was going fantastic.
Bam fell on a raised sidewalk and broken wrist. #### sakes. At least I can work with mostly one hand, and it won’t affect my running (can’t break that bone again lol).

I do, and it sucks, because after they get fixed I can't bitch about it anymore.

I wonder if the city would be ok with me doing that instead of shoveling.

I certainly wish the city prioritized sidewalks and particularly sidewalk ramps at intersections instead of counter-productively running plows days after a storm to create worse windrows. IMO plows shouldn't even touch any road that isn't a bus route (unless maybe it's a steep hill)
But expecting the same standard for the thousands of kms of city owned sidewalk as homeowners must do for their own 15 meters is silly.

Maybe they also shouldn't be scraping the #### out of roads that are nearly clear. No word of a lie they were plowing my street last night. Like uh, what? Have you considered the situation here? It's essentially clear, and the next three days are going to be between 10-15 degrees. It'll all be melted within 24hours. Maybe it's time to start cleaning the roads, not destroying them.

Roads were definitely worse this time last year, that was easily the most potholes I'd seen that I can remember
And they were still all fixed before summer

I expect them to be cleared within a reasonable time frame. I called after 4 weeks of it being icey and snow packed. Was very dangerous for anyone walking and a lot more dangerous than some potholes.
Then I expect them to send someone to clear it out not just put rocks on it. Finally got cleared few weeks ago from the sunshine we had then next snowfall they cleared it immediately so maybe the complaining helped.
Also btw the city subs most sidewalks out so these companies need to be held responsible imo. We literally pay taxes for this. Not reasonable having to walk on ice. My mom visits me and has to walk on these sidewalks for a distance and shes old and shouldn't have to worry about a broken hip from sidewalks not cleared.

Not sure how you can say that when pothole service requests are over 3x higher this year compared to last year.
Quote:
This year, there have also been 885 pothole 311 service requests so far, which is an increase of the 660 requests that came in for the same time period last year.

The point is that the increase in potholes this year isn’t just imaginary, old-man yelling at clouds stuff. The roads really are worse.

I've found this as well. For years I would just look at busted stuff and do nothing. But this one time there was a street sign dangling vertically by one screw over an intersection like a guillotine, and I felt obligated to dial 311.
It was fixed the next day.
Then folks started blowing through the stop sign intersection next to my house. It was because there were no street markings and a huge tree was blocking the view sign.
A week later the tree was trimmed back, and brand new street markings were laid down. Haven't heard anyone lean on the horn in months now!
I figure the 311 folks are just sitting there waiting for the phone to ring. When they do it's all "red alert! scramble trucks! deploy deploy deploy!"

Then it’s not a very good point. There are more requests. Tough to say if they’re worse.
