Long list of guys who were supposed to go “home”/had a preferred destination and ended up somewhere else long term.
Yep, other than Rantanen single handedly knocking Colorado out of the playoffs in game 7 because they thought the return was more important than a playoff run with him.

It's kind of hilarious though when you think about it. When they traded him out of the conference, they probably thought the risk of running into him in the playoffs this quickly was non-existent.

I can't help but wonder if they had better offers for him from Western teams but turned them down to avoid trading within the division or conference.

For a team right in their peak cup window trading him was ridiculously stupid. Overpay the guy by a mil or two who the #### cares. You only get so many swings at it, just blew one.

Believe this is what happened when the Kings dealt Martin Jones to Boston only to see him flipped to the Sharks.

Although that example is to a lesser extent, I think it demonstrates why teams refusing to deal with others is a poor concept. If the Oilers make the best pitch for Andersson, for example, the Flames should pull the trigger on that.

It makes you wonder if Landeskog was on the cusp of returning (or they knew he was gonna be good to go for 2025/2026 and beyond) and felt like Necas for Rantanen for another year of 6.5m made more sense at the time. I personally didn't think so, Rantanen is one of the best wingers in the game, no disrespect to Necas.

On 32 Thoughts this morning Friedman convinces himself that MacKinnon is going to spend the summer (at the WHC before that) convincing Crosby to come to Colorado.

Didn't Colorado do what we always say Edmonton should do by creating depth by getting rid of 'Drais" or McDdavid.

Colorado had a lot of holes outside of the top line, and no guarantee that Landeskog was coming back.

They essentially turned Rantanen into Necas, Coyle, Drury and Lindberg. Brock Nelson was a complete failure.

The team was also last in faceoffs.

Yep, moving Rantanen was an effort to turn around a team that had become too top-heavy. The status quo wasn’t working for the Avs.

My favourite example was the Senators refusing to trade Mike Hoffman, embroiled in the spouse bullying contraversy, within their division, only for the Sharks to acquire Hoffman and less than 24 hours later trade him to the Panthers for a superior return than what they gave the Senators. Brilliant by the Sharks and like Rantanen, a caution against artificially reducing your potential counterparties as it may come back to haunt you.

Trade One
Senators acquire: Boedker (semi-cap dump), Bergman (mid prospect), 6th-round pick.
Sharks acquire: Hoffman, 5th-round pick, Donaghey (no name prospect)

Trade Two
Sharks acquire: 2nd-round pick, 4th-round pick, 5th-round pick.
Panthers acquire: Hoffman, 7th-round pick.

Sharks net gain assuming 6th+7th = 5th:
- $4 million cap space
- 2nd-round pick
- 4th-round pick
- 5th-round pick
- immaterial depth prospect downgrade

And the Avs have extended their window with this move - more depth, and younger.

Let's see if they add Crosby next year.

I think Colorado would still be playing if they had managed to get Kadri out of Calgary. Crosby would be even better.

They traded Rantanen but ultimately didn't materially improve their depth with another line driving forward. Crosby/Kadri would have achieved that where Brock Nelson obviously wasn't the answer.

Am I correct in assuming the package for Nelson was the starting point for any offer for Kadri? Kadri is the better player and is more than just a rental. The return for Nelson was:

Calum Ritchie + 2026 1st round pick + 2028 3rd round pick + Oliver Kyllington

Would have been tempting but I doubt the flames or Kadri had much desire to trade. Wonder what more it would have taken for the flames to want to trade Kadri.

Colorado is in an interesting position....do you still trust the GM to build a winner.

The Mittelstadt, Johansen, and Nelson trades all look like absolute failures.

Then you have the Rantanen trade too which isn't a failure overall but did end up costing them this year.

They did okay to fix their goaltending this year, but overall I think the question marks have to be starting there.

Hey, we gave Kadri the trade protection so it's our fault. But that package would have been more than enough. Top 6 C prospect (he'd be the best one in our system) and a 20ish oa pick. That would have been good for our future.
