Makes me happy that Ukraine knows better than to tell the US what they're up too, knowing that that info will get leaked to Russia almost immediately

Wikipedia is your friend here.

The exact number of people can vary wildy, especially in wartime. A battalion is a battalion no matter how many casualties it takes, and a brigade is still a brigade no matter how many men are in the supportive elements.

There is also a Battle Group (Task Force if American).

It is a combination of the above and incorporates Infantry and Armour elements, depending on the size of the Battle Group.

Edit: Regiments are made up of Battalions.

For example:

PPCLI (a regiment) has 3 regular force battalions & 1 Reserve force battalions, but in wartime the 4th (which is the LER in Edmonton) would be active.

There are also Support Elements as well, Anti Armour, Motors, Machine Gun Det, then there is the Admin Coy

A tidbit from this video, not sure how reliable this information is, but it's plausible enough and both brilliant and very funny if true;

So apparently, the reason Russia wasn't reacting to an Ukrainian troop buildup in Sumy before this offensive was because...

Russia had purposefully created a false narrative that they were planning to attack Sumy, in order to divert Ukrainian troops away from the front. So when they saw Ukraine massing troops in Sumy, they thought "fantastic! They fell for our feint!"

If true, this was just brilliant intelligence judo from Ukraine.

The Ukrainian operation in Kursk is almost one week into execution. As the Russians slowly but surely redeploy forces to seal off the breach in their border and attempt to push the Ukrainians back into #Ukraine, it is worth pondering the options the Ukrainians might have..

Hilarious the FSB, an organization designed for civilian oppression, border security, and counter/foreign intelligence and not military operations, is being put in charge of countering the Ukrainian invasion. That'll go as well as we'd expect.

In Russian wars, Ukraine invades you....

Seriously though, this is the second time Russia has seen large amounts of their territory invaded, the first being by the Wagner Group. I guess the Russians just have no ability to secure their borders? They are still using the strategy of let the invading armies enter and have the winter finish them off?

Shoigu and Gerasimov both should have been sacked near the beginning of the war. They are yes-men that would rather cover up what the truth is rather than report it to Putin. Putin likely wouldn't have even invaded if they had actually reported Ukrainian attitudes towards Russia and the actual readiness of Russia's armed forces (probably so they could continue grifting). But they were loyal in the whole Wagner bum rush to Moscow and they sack their more semi-competent generals like Surovikin (who sided with Pringles against Shoigu)

More chaos in the Kremlin. A day after Putin replaced Army chief Gerasimov and w/ FSB head Portnikov to oversee the defense of Kursk, lawmakers in the Kremlin say Putin has removed Portnikov and appointed Alexei Dyumin, his former bodyguard in the Russian equivalent of the Secret Service. What is this guy going to do with a military op?? Sure, he could lead the stealth seizure of Crimea against no opposition, but against a battle hardened offensive?

Quote:
President Vladimir Putin appointed his aide and former bodyguard Alexei Dyumin to oversee Russia’s military response to the Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region, a federal lawmaker said Tuesday, an apparent confirmation of rumors circulated earlier by Russian military bloggers.

“Indeed, Alexei Gennadyevich Dyumin was summoned yesterday and tasked with supervising the counterterrorist operation,” State Duma lawmaker Nikolai Ivanov, whose district is in the Kursk region, told the RTVI broadcaster.

Dyumin was the only non-cabinet member not connected with the military or security services who was present at a televised meeting with Putin on Monday. During that meeting, which was focused on the fighting in the Kursk region, the Kremlin leader ordered the military to “dislodge” Ukraine’s forces from Russian territory.

Later, an anonymous Telegram channel claiming insider knowledge claimed that Putin directed Dyumin to “coordinate all agencies currently operating in the Kursk region.”

Moscow launched counterterrorism operations in the border regions of Kursk, Bryansk and Belgorod on Friday, granting the military sweeping emergency powers.

The pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Politsatirka noted that Dyumin’s military experience, “especially since the annexation of Crimea,” could be crucial in coordinating defense efforts.

Rybar, a prominent pro-war channel run by a former Defense Ministry spokesman, interpreted Dyumin’s alleged appointment as a sign of Putin’s dissatisfaction with military and security leaders
