I think Thomas will be a close to ppg two way center and Flames aren't getting full value for Tkachuk either way

This seems fair to me tbh without Jesper Bratt.

Allows flames to tank while getting a right-shot defenseman who should eventually slot into the first pairing. Add in a first round pick and it seems pretty fair.

Yup. Trading Tkachuk’s best friend for him makes a lot of sense.

Tkachuk is somewhere between 11th-15th among wingers. Though you can probably bump him up a slot now that Gaudreau is devil incarnate here.

Definitely better:
Nikita Kucherov
Patrick Kane
Alex Ovechkin
David Pastrnak
Kirill Kaprizov

Jonathan Huberdeau
Artemi Panarin
Johnny Gaudreau
Mitchell Marner
Mikko Rantanen
Putting aside that Tkachuk is a better defensive player than every guy on that list other than Huberdeau and maybe Rantanen, he also had more PPG last year than Kane, Pastranak, Ovechkin, Rantanen. Yet despite being better offensively and defensively than 3 of those guys he is worse than all of them. Or is Tkachuk a ####ty defensive player now too?

No, no it isn't. Without Bratt that is a terribly low sell.

Marner is at least as good defensively.

If you want to look no more than 1 season back then Tkachuk has a better case. But the rest of my list are far more consistently great, and have all shown better in the playoffs.

Amusing (and this is mostly tongue in cheek) ... to see some of the more pessimistic contributors playing chess and not checkers.

Sure you could argue you won't get much for Tkachuk, but wait ... what if you suggest the moon and then be ready when it doesn't come up to the bar you set!

Chess!

The Brad is best crowd does play a better strategic and longterm game. It is why they can still be his Tammy Wynette in this, his darkest hour.

All due respect that's not a very good analogy. Chess?
There is no bluffing in Chess nor is there any bar setting. Sorry maybe I missed something but perhaps Poker would be more apt? Maybe I'm just a bit daft today but I just don't get the slant in your idea that commenters are playing chess? not checkers????

Tkachuk had a career year by far...substantially better than his previous season

I suppose it all comes down to if he is likely to repeat it or not. I must say I didn't see many posts about Tkachuk being one of the best players in the league until recently around these parts.

IMO Lindholm did a lot of the heavy lifting defensively and Gaudreau offensively...Tkachuk was in the perfect spot. He is a really good player but not this top 5-10 nonsense. He also did sweet F all in the playoffs again outside of one game.

Tkachuk for Thomas is a win
Tkachuk for Kyrou++ is also a win

all IMO of course

So much Bratt love in here. One place where the Flames are lacking depth is in defensive prospects. I'd give the open roster spot to a Flames prospect ready for the jump, and go Nemec, Shakir Mukhamadullin and an unprotected 1st. That's essentially three firsts, and that unprotected one is a big gamble for Jersey.

I don't think you get an unprotected first and Bratt would be included cause he needs a raise

How you project the team makes a huge difference for any picks...you never know but one would have to think the Devil's picks are more valuable than the Blues picks

blues unprotected pick isn't all that exciting since they are likely a playoff team

all IMO of course
He had over 100 pts
He had 77 pts with Backlund
He led the Flames in scoring 1 year

He will have no problem scoring wherever he goes. Whoever trade for him will put him with their best players

Again I am not saying he is bad...104 points though? GL with that

Funny he is now the greatest player in team history to you, I don't remember you pumping his tires when you were trashing the Flames all season

Did I say he is the greatest in history? It’s people like you that say he can’t repeat now since he is leaving. He is 24.

I really hope this gets resolved soon. I hate not knowing the direction of the team at this point in the off -season.

Agreed. Even if they went full Arizona over the next year it would be exciting to know the direction and plan and get to evaluate the moves

Even a new contract for Kylington or Mangiapane would be nice or any RFA
