How so? How did doing away with away goals motivate RM to play an open game?
Villareal was more of an example of the new rule in action. The team at home in the second leg is free to park the bus in the first leg with zero motivation to score an away goal knowing full well they can take risks in the second leg not having to worry about the away goal factor.

You could have away goals count as 10 goals and Villarreal still would have parked that bus yesterday. Being severely overmatched had far more to do with not even trying to go forward then the new meaningless to away goals.

You don't know that but what is a fact is that there is a greater motivation for the away team to simply avoid defeat knowing that they can go for it at home in the second leg regardless if they give up a goal.

Certainly a polarizing figure. Sad to see him go so young.

whatever you thought about his behaviour as an agent, 54 is way too damn young. Sad stuff.

Far too young.

Really strange too as there was a report that he had died last week which he was vigorously upset about....only to actually die a week later?

Helluva achievement.

Well color me utterly shocked, Villarreal with a goal inside three minutes and all of a sudden they are alive again.

What a debacle for Liverpool. Frankly they are getting battered here, extremely impressive from Villarreal.

they are not getting battered. Villareal is playing well but it's been a close match thus far. Liverpool need to find a goal early in the 2nd half.

It really hasn't been close though. Liverpool are being well outplayed here, and not even on scale grade, just straight up. Looking a lot like how Villarreal played Bayern off the park in the first leg.

Villarreal came out with a lot higher energy level. They were first to a few balls and that made a huge difference.

Still expect Liverpool to pull this out, but they've certainly taken a few years off their fans lives tonight. Emery also deserves tons of credit, they are playing balls to the wall right now.

Was a good effort from Villarreal, but after letting in a stinker like that you knew they'd fall apart. Too bad.

How could they have expended all of their energy? They only played 1 half of football.

That being said, they could have been tired, it is exhausting having to slog through an absolutely sopping wet, flooded pitch, that was ridiculous.

Casemiro and Fernandinho need to teach a course on the dark arts. Without a doubt the two guys who get away with more than anyone.

I mean Laporte slapped Modric in the face, then dove grabbing his own face and Modric got a yellow for it.
