I'm sure that it'll be a draw out of a 'hat' like they normally do it.

There were nine groups. Only the eight highest point earners earned a place in the playoffs. Results in the six team groups against the lowest placed team at the end of qualifying, not initial seeding, are ignored for this total in order to avoid unfair treatment of teams in the five team only group.

Fair play to the Mexicans. It wouldn't be the same without them. They should hammer the Kiwis over two legs no problem.

Bitter sweet win against Panama. Quietly rooting for a Panama win just to stick it to El Tri.

Heartbreaking for Panama. Two years down the drain in injury time by a bunch of US subs.
Imagine... that could have been Canada.

Looking forward to irrationally supporting the Three Lions through another crushing disappointment.

FYP
Yup, Canada had it all setup for them with the easier qualifying groups up to the Hex. One or two better results before that final game may also made that final game moot.
Get into the Hex and I thought anything could happen...and it has.
The buildup and anticipation the last couple months as games went on and results came, and then Canada qualifying last night, would've been a monumental national story.

No no, not Canada qualifying last night, Canada being knocked out in injury time
However, I think in the end it proved that Canada wasn't in the easiest qualifying group since Honduras has made the World Cup (again) and Panama have really improved coming out of the 1st round (they even made the Gold Cup Final). A group with Cuba (who were seeded) and another minnow would have been a dream or even the US/Jamaica group since I'm sure back in November, Canada could beat Jamaica.
In soccer you really gotta kick teams when they're down. In 2012 Honduras were terrible but Canada couldn't win that game in Toronto.

Ha, well yes. My suggestion would've been own possession for final 20'.
Love how it turned out though.

Italy have fallen out of the seedings.
tomorrow rankings the world cup seeds will be
Brazil
Spain
Germany
Argentina
Belgium
Colombia
Uruguay
Switzerland
If Uruguay don't qualify Holland will be seeded
in the euro playoffs ukraines demolition of san marino and swedens loss to germany means ukraine are now seeded and sweden are not

Independent had an example of what the 4 pots could be
Quote:
POT 1 (Seeds): Brazil, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Colombia, Uruguay
POT 2 (Concacaf/Afc/Oceania): USA, Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico, Iran, South Korea, Japan, Australia
POT 3 (Caf/Conmebol/+ one from Uefa): Ghana/Egypt, Nigeria/Ethiopia, Burkina Faso/Algeria, Ivory Coast/Senegal, Tunisia/Cameroon, Chile , Ecuador, (lowest-ranked Uefa qualifiers)
POT 4 (Uefa): Netherlands, Italy, England, Russia, Bosnia + three highest-ranked play-off winners
|
something like Switzerland/USA/Burkina Faso/England would be brilliant

France can complain all they want, but they're not drawing Portugal
Platini knows how this works, they are getting Greece or Ukraine

Then France could be the lowest uefa team and put in the african pot.
Argentina Holland France Korea would be a fun group.
also remember Chile and Ecuador must be in group with two europeans in it

How does Italy fall out of the rankings?
Euro finalist, undefeated in qualifying, yet Belgium and Switzerland are seeded ahead of them.

Too many draws. Quite simply we know that multiplying anything by 0 is 0, multiplying anything by 1 is anything and multiplyling anything times 3 is triple anything.
The formula for world cup qualifiers in europe is
win/draw/loss x 2.5 x (200 - opponents ranking)
So in the last game the swiss beat 29th ranked slovenia
3 x 2.5 x (171) = 1282.5
italy draw 55th ranked Armenia
1 x 2.5 x (145) = 362.5
just with this result alone.. the difference is huge
You point total is the average off all these scores over 2 years. 362.5 really sucks
Italy also draw on friday again Denmark.
Also Italy sucked in the confederations cup (won one match out of 4), that brings the average down.

A stupid system that doesn't take into account that Italy's last two games in a tougher group were meaningless. And before someone tries and tell me that they were important for the rankings I say absolute BS.
As mentioned in the article a win against either Armenia or Denmark in either of their last two meaningless games would have left them ranked fourth.
Teams that have qualified are in preparation and experimental mode.
Also, the points total is average results weighted in over the last four years.
