Our Xmas bonus is our yearly bonus as well - So it's not like O&G companies are throwing bonuses around all year.

because a 10% bonus in February instead just wouldn't cut it!

Awesome - I can just see saying to my assistant "I'm taking you to Vegas for 3 nights as your X-Mas bonus! We'll go see Tom Jones, and Comedy Central. What? No, no - same room. "

I'm surprised bonuses are being given out this year.
I went the other way. I not only didn't get a bonus, but I also reduced my variable compensation to get a more steady income. We're not out of the woods yet in this recession.

when you work in a public sector, unionized workplace, a bonus is getting xmas eve off without using a vacation day...

When you work in the private sector, you don't use up all your vacation days because you have important work to do.

Not a chance. Don't live paycheque to paycheque, but I match my pay stub to my direct deposit, then to my hours worked every payday. I've seen too many 'computer errors' miss a stat or OT before. Doesn't matter I'm shorted $10 or $1,000, I put in the hours, I'll make sure I take the cash thank you.

So if the government really is taking "Almost half" and that's causing you to troubles getting enough food, then maybe you should lay off the caviar.
Jokes aside,i f you make less than $82k which, considering you're complaining about eating, I'm guessing is the case, then you're only paying 32% which is quite a bit less than half.
But we all pay taxes man, why should a bonus be any different?
|
I think the problem is that we have so much more tax taken off than normal. The way I think it works is that the government looks at my bonus, extrapolates the value over 26 pay periods and assumes that's my yearly salary and then taxes me based on that amount, which of course puts me at 39%. Plus my bonus comes in Feb, so I get to pay CPP and EI on it too. So it's pretty close to 50% for me. And then I have to wait an entire year to get that overpayment back. Interest free.

Yeah I have 2 week company shutdown (unpaid), and with 3 weeks vacation and a few more exteded company shutdown (unpaid) in addition to the 11 stat holidays, I get like 5.5 weeks of vacation a year. Granted half of it is unpaid, but I'd rather take less money and more vacation days.
Downside is I hear Q4, I'm going to be working 14 hour days. I've only worked through Q1 and Q2 and both quarters were a little slow.

Not to be picky but Reaper was the one correcting TylerSVT not me. I was saying that Reaper's number of $108,000 suggests a 54 week year, as $2,000 X 52 = $104,000. So in correcting TylerSVT Reaper made an equally silly mistake. Has nothing to do with 57 vs. 47. (Which as FKA pointed out is still silly unless Tyler has 5 unpaid weeks off each year)
Anyway, back on topic...
Today is the last day bossman's in the office before the holiday, so I'm waiting to see...
