There's a draft Naheed Nenshi for Mayor facebook group that has popped up. He's one non-councilor that would be an excellent choice for mayor. MRU business prof, herald columnist and Better Calgary Campaign founder.

In all seriousness, it makes me wonder how many people who would make a great mayor, counciler, MLA, etc; but don't run because of one or two little incidents in their past.

Bronco deserves thanks for getting job done
By Naheed Nenshi, For The Calgary Herald
After Mayor Dave Bronconnier's announcement that he will not be running for re-election, the natural impulse is to start the horse race coverage of who might replace him. There will be plenty of time for this discussion in the future, but it's now time to think about Bronconnier's legacy.
I returned home to Calgary in 2001, shortly before Bronconnier's first election victory, after seven years away. I was surprised at how much had changed, but also how little.

I wonder if Naheed Nenshi will run himself. He always seems very reasoned in his arguments.

Her annual 'we don't need a 10% tax hike' campaign is plenty good enough for me. I don't see my alderman's job as finding new and creative ways to spend money.
Most CPers would disagree, which is fine. In my book having some sense of fiscal restraint plus not feeling the need to grandstand or build a legacy is pretty solid. I like her.

I don't have any issue with the fiscal restraint part of it. I do think that when someone has been an Alderman for this long though (and through some not so lean years) there ought to be more of a reason to consider them as mayor though. Saying "I can balance a cheque book" isn't really that impressive is it?

It may be more experience than some of the current Aldermen.

I was on students' union when Nenshi was there. Naheed is a really smart guy, scary smart actually, but I'm also not so sure he'd make a good politician. He certainly works hard and takes the development of cities seriously. He is also very unusual... its hard to explain.
I'd question his ability to raise the funds needed to make a serious run. I also think he's an above board and honest guy who won't, like many other candidates, have an agenda run by a few developers filling his war chest.
I'd consider voting for him, but have reservations. It would really shake up city hall, which I think is a good thing.

I've got a story about that... Kent's mum was my Junior High vice principal, and her husband was some sort of Administrator with the Calgary Board of Ed. as well.
Guess what Kent's dad's name is? Guess what he goes by? I am not making this up, I swear to god.
Dick.
I sh*t you not.

His name is Richard, but he goes by Dick. In 8th Grade we got some letter about having our parents authorize that we get our pictures taken for some publicity thing (probably a CBE flyer or pamphlet) and at the bottom it was signed
"Dick Hehr"
We died laughing, and then died again when we found out it was our VP's husband.
Ohh 8th grade, everything was funny then.
