This is the sad part of the world we live in. A thread talking about a country disaster and 100,000+ people are reported to have died falls to the second page of this forum no problem. However if you catch Tiger Woods cheating on his wife it's a 50 page thread which stays on the front page for days on end.
well to be fair the tiger woods one was full of jokes, crude comments and one liners. I don't think that would be suitable in this one.
I heard on the news that there was rumour that a tsunami was coming so masses of people headed for the hills in terror. It turns out that a group of bandits started the rumour and then went to the camp and stole food and supplies from the people.

I just received this email from M.S.F. (Doctors without Borders). It is an update on what they are doing in Haiti. It is great that you can have an idea of what the Charity you donated to is doing to help.
Dear Friend, Thank you for your recent donation to help the people of Haiti. In light of the severity of the earthquake in Haiti on January 12, and the outpouring of concern from supporters, I'll be sending you regular updates on the work we are doing in Haiti. As you read this, MSF medical teams in Port-au-Prince are treating thousands of people who were injured in the quake. Most have fractures, head injuries and other major trauma injuries. We have set up four tented facilities beside the now damaged hospitals we used to work in. The need for wound treatment and major surgery is immense. Currently, an MSF field hospital is arriving by air, equipped with two operating theatres, along with trauma surgeons and anesthetists. Our teams on the ground in the capital are also trying to identify intact buildings that could be used to do surgery. Food, water and shelter materials are all in short supply, but medical stocks are not yet exhausted. Forty tonnes of material will arrive on the ground tonight, conditions permitting, and an additional 80 staff will join the more than 800 MSF staff already working in Haiti. Teams will be distributing medical disaster kits, blankets, plastic sheeting, hygiene and cooking sets, tents and jerrycans. You can continue to help by forwarding this message or sharing it with your networks on Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for your solidarity at this most difficult time. Marilyn McHarg General Director, MSF Canada
I keep becoming more shocked of the conditions there. With all these orgs looking for money, I don't know which one to use. Which org will make the best use of anything I give them?
Had to go to Walmart for a supply run today and made a donation to the Canadian Red Cross at the till. Maybe I'm a sucker but Walmart and the Red Cross would seem legitimate enough to me so that the few dollars I did spare can help out. They are making it somewhat conveninet for people to get money to organizations like the Red Cross or Medecins sans frontiers so hopefully that will allow a lot of people who in the past wanted to help but didn't know how to get money to the appropriate organizations. They certainly are going to need all the help they can get plus some.

This is all just so horrible. I can't turn CNN off no matter how many times I see the same picture/video it still blows my mind. The stories of orphan children about to be adopted now stuck in Haiti with their paperwork ruined and the people working on their cases are dead. The doctors having to leave 25+ people who are dying or just had recent surgery because of security risks and looters. The parents of children trapped in buildings sitting and waiting for help for 4 days outside the building they know their child is, dead or alive they have no idea.
Scary, scary stuff!

The neat thing I found out about them a few years back is that they have a permanent presence in most nations around the world. They'll continue to do so, and have infrastructure in place to help however they can.
I may see about doing some more, but I'll know more in a week or so....

thank you for kind comments and one person cleaned up my stupid uneditable (is that a word) post. And thank you for donations. Just wanted to add about GLA (God's Littlest Angels). Wolf Blitzer had the Haitian Ambassador to the U.S. in studio while he had Dixie from GLA on satellite link up. She was imploring him to allow all the children who have adoption processes begun to go to their prospective parents on the basis of humaitarian relief. He stopped short and said that people can get their children passports from their Embassy in Washington, but only for those that were in the final stages of the process. It helps, but he obviously does not get the fact that Dixie is going to have hundreds of new orphans coming her way soon. If a government that has been dealing with Haitian adoptions for years have already approved a person to make the adoption, why not just let the child go? Unfortunately, Haitians often communicate through rumours because not many have access to TV and radio. One thing I have been living with is my twins' biological mom always needing reassurance that the kids are okay (send photos, videos). This paranoia that adopted children are abused seems widespread in Haiti.

Do you think this goes back to when they were slaves thinking we (as in "white man") are trying to do the same thing with their children and use them? Where does it stem from? Just pure rumors?
That is fascinating that she would ask for those types of things for that reason. Does she still communicate with the children or do you just send her info? I never realized that you would stay in touch like that.
It sounds like they are giving emergency Visas to orphans which were close to being adopted which is a blessing because personally I never knew how bad Haiti was until this disaster. I knew it was a poor country, similar to towns I have been to/helped in Mexico, but never had a clue how bad it actually was.
I understand why people would want to have children of their own but I think it is great, for whatever reason, that there are people like you helping those already in the world see a better life and have a chance.

HOOT, I think it has less to do with slavery and more to do with lack of other media. Criminals spread the rumour that a tsunami was coming, scaring hundreds of people up into the hills, just so they could just take the aid and supplies they left behind in their panic. Haitians often rely too heavily on word of mouth and far too often believe what they are told without critically thinking. Same thing happened when they were distributing those energy cookies. One person thought that the packing date was the expiry date and began yelling that they were no good. Many just took his word for it and left or crumbled the food.
