So yeah - tonight I couldn't make it up a slight incline with my "all seasons" at Crowchild and 12 Mile Coulee... (I wasn't the only one)

And here's the Alanis lyric: the winter tires I purchased yesterday are sitting in my garage.

Survived a harrowing drive home from Canmore yesterday - BEFORE my winter tires were installed (that happens on Tuesday). Eastbound #1 at Lac Des Arcs was parked for 50-60 minutes - y'know, those curves where the speed reduces to 95? Anyway, after we got crawling through - WOW. Jacknifed trailers, minvan collision with semi trailer, car onto the other side of the road. Crazy stuff. Saw two more accidents with emergency vehicles and ditched cars on WB #1 on the drive home, as well as some yahoo who spun out on the #1 exit to NB Stoney Trail.

I adjusted for the driving conditions - only on the dry highway near Cochrane did I actually go 110 - in my sports car with summer performance tires and made it through fine. Tires will never replace a sensible head on your shoulders.

That said, I will feel better when my winter tires are installed next week. Only $1,400 with winter rims.

How does everyone store their out of season tires? Tire totes? Wheel stand? Or do you just stack them on top of each other?

I stacked 'em in my garage last year, but they were just the tires since I never got winter rims for my old car. Should do the same this year - they'll just be a lot heavier to lift.

This October is crazy. I always put on my winter tires at Halloween and I swear I'm usually the first guy to do it. Going to have to do it way sooner this year. WTF!

I has mine stacked, but this spring I picked up a tire rack- similar to this one: Tire Rack I think the sale price ends today.

Fortunately I have a 10 foot ceiling in my garage, so I was able to put the rack a little more than 6 feet up in the air to allow being able to walk under it. If you are doing the same measure cerfully- as the tires will hang down a bit as they sit in the rack.

One website has this to say:

"Winter Challenger S 1086 ADAC Motorwelt - Oct 2008
Comparative Strengths - performance on ice, rolling resistance, wear, price
Comparative Weaknesses - wet performance, snow performance, dry performance, comfort, noise"

This website has the most user reviews of many foreign tires, it seems. It should give you an idea of people's thoughts.

I'm thinking of buying this tire over at www.1010tires.com. I only read the crude review at APA.ca and more or less it says it's the best winter tire out there. I'm just putting it on my 2000 Civic. Anyone have this tire or have any suggestions they'd rather have? One of the most important factors for me is wear. This seems to have very good longevity, which plays a big part in my decision.

Bridgestone Blizzak WS-60 - 185/65R14 - BW

Total comes to $573. Good deal? Should I also get separate rims for about $250 more? or just use my existing rims with the winter tires (or pick up locally)?

of all the winter tires I've ever had, Blizzaks were the best. You know when there's that super hardpacked snow on the street that has been packed down so much it's like ice and everybody just spins on it? Your Blizzaks will literally bite down INTO it like one or two inches. You'll beat 4x4s and AWD cars off the line. Sounds like a great deal too, btw.

Rims are your call. Worth it if you plan on changing over your wheels by yourself; otherwise I wouldn't bother.

Only KAL tire sells them. Price varies widely depending on the tire size and which Hakka we are talking about. I think the quote I got for Hakka 5s, installed (no rims) was about $1280, but that was for a large, less-common tire size. With rims, I was looking at close to $1600. Needless to say, I'm still shopping.

Mine are from Kal. They were expensive. Over a grand to mount on my stock rims. I have summer rims and tires as well, so I got winters last year. My stock rims are 17" and the tires mounted on them are 235/55R17, so it's a lot of tire. if you have smaller tires, the price will be less.

Kal tire is the biggest rip off. I'm sure you can find them on the Internet. 2 years ago I paid $220 to have a kid making $12/hr spend 30 mins mounting my tires.

My tires weigh a ton - just lag bolts into 2x4 framing I presume to secure the rack to the wall?
