"OMG you wear $40 jeans? What a loser" kind of stuff. It is just really weird to hear guys talk about their "style" and how much they love name brand stuff.
Of course I have my own bias built into that, as do many other people. And I have noticed that a lot of the posts have been genuine and about quality more than about bragging about name brands, but nevertheless it does remind me of watching kids get ridiculed for not wearing top designer fashion when really 99% of the time that is all BS and a $50 pair of jeans is of at least as good of quality as $200 pairs. I know the intentions of the posters isn't to come off as some 16 year old choch who thinks being seen with brand names is all that matters but I can see how others get that impression.
For full disclosure I don't think there is anything wrong with a guy who is concerned about his fashion, I just find it strange that it has to be associated with a name brand. I never buy clothes because the maker, I buy them because of look, quality, feel etc. And I do own a few G-Star Raw jakcets so I'm no stranger to spending ridiculous sums of money to look good.

if i came off as ridiculing someone who buys 50 dollar jeans it was not my intention. In my experience with jeans like american eagle and hollister , which i spent 50 bucks on, is that they didnt seem to last for me .. I always tore holes in the crotch or around the pockets etc. i was not saying people are stupid for buying 50 dollar jeans nor was i saying they look like a nerd wearing them

^^^ In reaction to the crotch tear. he most expensive jeans I bought were $120 Guess jeans and a hole ended up in the crotch less than a year later. I stick to AE Hollister etc. Every once in a while I might splurge on some expensive ones but probably wouldn't go over $200

This thread made me want another pair of jeans so I went shopping today. I would usually go straight towards the designer jeans stores ready with $250-$300 if needed and hoping for a good pair on sale.
I decided to try Winners first after all of the recommendations in this thread, and actually found a great pair of Diesels for $100!!!
Exactly the style, colour and cut I needed and Winners came through for me this time. Saving $$ rules!!

I think the crotch tear is pretty common... that is the first thing to go on all of my jeans. I thought it was because I had a big sack.

Winners is great for all kinds of things. They get alot of stuff you cant get in stores here. I saw an 800 dollar suede coach purse there for 300 dollars. It was not in stores in Canada. They also have good deals on really high quality shoes (Donald J. Pliner of Beverly Hills shoes that sell for 350 in the States for 125..but I find their jeans and coats are the best buys. I used to work in a high end clothing store and I got a 50 percent discount and alot of times I got a better deal on the same item at Winners.

Ever since I started picking my own jeans, I wore Levi's Silver Tabs. My family were very much the $25 Wrangler kind of folks, so my mom would always give me crap about these $50 jeans that went "on sale for $40". I think she did realize that they were better though, because you could just feel by picking them up that they were a lot more substantial.
So anyway, I wore these things for years, until the "heavily distressed" trend got to be too much for me. When the only pairs of brand new Silver Tabs I could find looked like they needed to be thrown away (the stringy holes, black stains, etc) I pretty much stopped buying jeans. Around that same time they seemed to stop using as heavy of denim, and the prices went down, so that turned me off of them even more.
Fortunately the pendulum is swinging back the other way a bit now on ruined jeans. The only pair of non-Silver Tab jeans I've bought in probably a decade is a pair by DKNY that I found last year at Gordman's, which I believe is a similar store to your Winners. I've been wearing them almost non-stop, and I'm hard on jeans, but they are holding up well. Of course you can never find the same thing twice at those kind of places, so now I'm intrigued by these "fancy" jeans.
As some other people have said though, I don't really want the giant logos on the back pockets, and that seems to limit my selection. This has been an educational thread.

So I mentioned this thread to my wife last night in bed and how enlightening it was, and she said that she'd be thrilled if I bought a new pair of jeans or two, "and please not Wrangler again".
Thanks to CP, there will be a mini-shopping spree in the next week or so in the Goon household.

Beats the hell out of me. I'll let the Mrs. take charge, which she seems excited to do.
As long as they're not acid wash jeans. I already did that in the late 80s.

You know, for some weird reason I have an issue with this.
You pay a bit more in a store for the service and convenience of being able to try things on, see how they fit and look on you.
You pay less online because you don't get this.
It's pretty messed up to use someones goods/services, which they are paying for, with the prior knowledge that you would never actually spend money there.

Actually you pay less online because there is more competition online. The reason the store is so expensive is due to the lack of competition forcing the price down.

so are you telling me that 400 dollar pair of true religions that i can get online for 170 shouldnt be bought at a discount because i tried them on at a store.... SO they are charging me 230 bucks to try on a pair of jeans.... hogwash, i have bought a lot of stuff from retailers when they have sales but im not gonna pay full retail so they can make a killing. On some things i agree with your theory like local hockey equipment stores etc but not huge retail chains who just sit around and make gobs of money by overcharging for their clothes.

Exaggerate the prices a bit?
Seriously man, the pair I'm currently wearing came to $220 after tax @ the store I bought em. They go for $180 online before fees.
So for some stores it is fine to rip them off, but not others? Why wouldn't you use the local hockey equipment stores?
Competition? Are you joking? How is the store not in competition with the online stores? They sell the same products.

now these are in USD currencies which put these jeans at 398.75 canadian before taxes .. so before you tell me im exaggerating please realize that the super T, and rainbow pockets, and some of the other jeans can be a lil more expensive .... i got a pair of these jeans for my buddy at 199.00 usd which makes it 250 canadian .... Im not trying to be a dick but you pretty much all but called me a liar ....
edit : and i know they prob are 180 online but a lot of the online retailers i used give coupons and have specials , one online place i use a ton of..... usually give 30% off and a couple times a month i get spend 150 get 50 bucks off or spend 250 and get 100 bucks off ...
I mean when retail place put their stuff on sale at 35% or 40% they are still making money on the items 90 percent of the time....
and usually local hockey stores are private owned and depend on local business to survive so i would feel a lot worse going in there and wasting their time and such and not giving them any business than i would a huge retail chain that over prices thier jeans
