BUCKSHOT
The Buckshot Show, where Reggie Dunlop (what happened to CalgaryPuck's finest?) made history as being the first kid to flatulate on live TV and be heard clear as a bell. The man was a legend... as he tells it.

BUCKSHOT
I went on Buckshot when I turned 5 years old. Dream come true at the time. Buckshot gave us all a cold McDonald's hamburger and a cup of their Orange Death Drink.

A few years later Buckshot came to visit my near my home town. Some kids from my class decided to go throw rocks at his trailer. Nothing better to do in a small town I guess. However, Buckshot was in the trailer at the time. He came out cursing a blue streak, as they ran for their lives. "GET BACK HERE YOU LITTLE F******!"

I remember when there was a BMX track called the "Pitts" up the hill where Bowbottom Trail and Deerfoot now cross. It was behind Queensland overlooking Fish Creek Park. Diamond cove is now built on top of it. Spent most of the early 80's there. There was also an old car down the other side by the river that some one must have drove or pushed off the cliff.

F&J's.....yup....rock and roll greatness that place was.

Saw Kim Mitchell live from about 10 feet away when he came through promoting his first solo album after Max Webster split.

Live Wire...yikes....WAYYY too many memories i had blocked out for years till i saw that mentioned.

Also, way back when there was a bar in the Majestic Hotel called the Magic Stick. Got arrested there once...and the snot beat out of me by 5 bouncers as well. Also had a LOT of fun there for a few years.

Damn...been gone for 5 years and sounds like a ton of changes since then already.

Anyone know what happened to Back Street "Lounge" Smugglers? I heard its gone as well. THAT was a great joint.

Also, is the Taj Mahal Restaurant still licking?

[I remember when there was a BMX track called the "Pitts" up the hill where Bowbottom Trail and Deerfoot now cross.]

Man, I broke the handlebars on my Kuahara BMX at the 'Pits' and had to walk it back up the hill to my house in Bonavista.

Quite the Bonavista crowd in this thread! I too frequented the Pitts on my Black Diamond BMX!

I remember trying to find the spot in Fish Creek where they said Charles Ng, the serial killer from California, was living before he got caught at the Bay downtown.

I grew up in Bonavista too. My Dad liked to tell us that we had the fastest tobagon in the land, so we would get the crayons out, wax'r down, build massive jumps at the bottom of the hill at the lake and.... break every bone in our body. GOOD TIMES. Playing out door hockey at nickle before the rec was built. This weather ain't so bad.

I remember we'd have hot chocolate on the bench and we'd sit in our parents cars to warm up in between periods! Haha! Thank god they didn't wait too long to build the rec centre.

What a great thread. Some things I remember,

- parade down 17th ave SE every Dominion (Canada) Day

- the red and white, inflated roof arena at the east end of Memorial Drive. Now Abbeydale ?

- when the airport was still referred to as McCall field (not sure if it actually was changed to Calgary International by that time [early70's] or not, but I remember hearing the name)

- the drive in theater where Point Mckay now is. I believe I saw my first drive in movie (Jaws) there with my parents.

- watching movies at the Palace theater every Sat morning. If you were a school patrol, you were let in free I'm pretty sure, or at least discounted prices.

- Chestermere Lake was a weed infested, overgrown slough, with one road alongside the western edge of it with a dozen or so summer type homes

- chinook center was a couple of malls that had grown into each other to form a discombobulated mass of retail shopping. It even had it's own road of some kind in the middle iirc. I remember going to Calgary Cowboy booster club meetings upstairs....must of been at some primitive form of food court I think?!

- the Centennials were the hottest thing in town , for me at least - Don Ashby, Danny Gare, Jerry Holland, and Scotty Munro are some of the names I remember. Oh yeah, Eric Bishop did the play by play for CFAC !

My Mother grew up on a small farm in what is now Forest Lawn. She's no longer with us, but her and my Grandfather used to be able to tell us some good "I remember whens".
Calgary has definately come a long ways, even in a short number of years.

Was there a bar called something like Denny Andrew's American Bar or something stupid like that? Am I dreaming? I seem to recall going there, I can picture it but I'm not sure if thats the name and I don't remember where it was. Wow. I'm a lot of help. Maybe it was Yankee Doodles, I dunno.
Yeah. I remember that too. Was that the one in the old Westgate Hotel. Or was that "Dooie Stevens". I always mix those two up.

Here's another question. My family used to always refer to KFC as "Barneys Chicken". Was this just unique to my family or was it actually a common thing?

Edit: Speaking of chicken. Whatever happened to "Church's Fried Chicken"? Or. "St. Albert's Chicken".

Man. Not enough chicken choices anymore.

Yeah, I remember the Barney's thing too. I think they used to be franchised out to individual type businesses in some way, and you called it whatever you wanted maybe? I know my wife said Kentucky frieds were called something different out on the coast too.

That's pretty weird. I was the longest serving member of the Image Bank team that does those images at Glenbow. I probably did the scanning for most of those. Their archive records are indeed pretty expansive and you can search for anything on their site.
Anyway, anyone else remember The Enchanted Castle or Rocky and Bowinkles?
Or the cool arcades at malls, Sunridge in particular. Course there's good ole Woodwards and the skys had CP air, Ward Air etc in them. I think the concorde flew over once too when it first was around, does that ring a bell?

I was on Spelling Bee too. We won the first one, and lost on the second appearance. I wore my Flames jersey on the first one (I think) and Ed Whalen said, "Nice jersey". I thought that was pretty cool at the time.

This thread has sure brought back some memories for me. I was a forces brat and lived on the base just off Crowchild and 33rd for a few years and then in Southwood. A few of the things I remember best in no particular order are:

- First pro hockey game, Calgary Cowboys vs Phoenix Roadrunners. Smokey McLeod, Danny Lawson, Ron Chipperfield, Rick Jodzio were some Cowboys while the Roadrunners had Robbie Ftorek.

- I only saw one Centennial game however I went to many Wrangler games seeing the likes of Kelly Kisio and Dana Murzyn playing for the good guys.

- Seeing a tournament of juniors featuring teams West, Ontario, Quebec and Russia. I only remember Mike Bossy and Behn Wilson off the top of my head but I still have the programs with the names of many players who's careers have come and gone.

- First fast food restaurant I went to with my dad after we moved here was JB Bigboys on MacLeod next to Lloyds Rollercade.

- The drive in movies everyone one has mentioned, Stampede by Anderson Rd., Sunset off Edmonton Trail.

- Rougeunderoos mentioned Home Food Inn, if your talking about when they were in the little house type building on 1A street or something close to that then I know just what your talking about. The food was the best around.

- People have mentioned Buckshot, I went to school at Central Memorial with a couple of his kids. There was also another kids show called Dale Harney I believe, who was a magician. It makes me laugh because a buddy of mine won a G.I Joe on that show.

- Going to the Odeon Theatre on 33rd St. and 20th Ave.

- My dad taking me to see Slap Shot at Westbrook when I was about 14 and being embarrassed when there were nekkid boobies.

- Driving by Peter's Drive In and Chicken on the Way thinking that they are about the only things that are still the same since I moved here.

- Hanging out at some bars like the Westgate (we called it fat chicks at the time), Live Wire, Southern Comfort, Ranchmans Uptown, El Marocco, Coconut Joes.

- Horse back riding at Elbow Valley Riding Stables for $10 an hour and thinking it was outrageous to pay that much.

Remember 2&7 "Scoop" - news for kids? I ended up becoming friends with the host of that - Cassandra - in university.

Oh and CBC's Switchback with Humble Howard? Man I wanted to be on that show....

Thats another great memory of mine from my childhood.

I loved watching that show.

When I am acting like a child, and have had a couple of cold ones, I still sometimes clap above my head
