flameswin,
I respect your opinion. But I have a different one. I'd be pissed at teammates, sober or not, who ruin a game for me, board members or not. I'm just not a fan of how this game was handled, from the start of the game to the posting of what happened, and some of the reactions.
I can't fault anyone, but I figured my opinion was as valid as someone who enjoyed the stories...

It's kinda sad that you have to make an "event" out of it to get people to show up. I guess you have alot of guys with money to burn while the rest of us wish we could have been playing.
Personally it shouldn't matter the day or time of the game. I wouldn't give two craps if it's an 11:15 game on Halloween in Indus, I'd still be there ready to play because thats what teammates do, you don't let the rest of the team down because of something like that.

Well if our whole team was full of players like you, the I'm sure we would have just played it like a regular game, but on this particular team it took an "event" to get enough guys out, so that's what happened.

Yes true, I wouldn't have started the thread if I didn't want to hear all opinions, good or bad.

Not debating that, just saying that denouncing beer drinking on a beer league team seems pretty ridiculous to me. At least they provided a DD.

Generally the drinking is reserved for after, not before and during the game

I am not trying to suggest you guys are a bunch of Animal House buffoons. If that was a pre-planned event, and the expectation was that drinks were going to be had ahead of time, which I know it was due to the DD thread, so be it.
And I'm not trying to get all reightous or anything. But I've had some friends get drunk, and not been able to talk sense into them, and they've made mistakes. I've know hockey players to have stepped over the line from time to time.
It just sounds like to me, it wouldn't have been something I would have wanted to be a part of. I don't know the parties involved, and I'm not trying to suggest that I'm all high and mighty, and that I don't make mistakes.
Just doesn't sound like anything good came out of this other than a story about a delay of game minor.

Is that the issue though? I just came across this thread.
I don't think the issue has anything to do with drinking beer on a beer league team; I think it is reflecting more on the timing of drinking said beer (i.e. before or after game).

....and like Jayems said earlier, we're all fairly young and had fun, but we can't expect everyone to share our opinion. Lots of people in this thread thought it was awesome, while a few denounced it, that's fine. I knew it wouldn't be all high fives and "way to go"'s.

For sure, but with the ice times in the beer leagues in this city going for a beer after is impossible. If you want to meet up with your team for beers it usually happens before. You aren't getting pissed up before but a couple pints before an 11pm game is not uncommon for any of the teams I've played on. We drank with the entire opposing team before a 11:30pm ice time in Okotoks one night.

Yeah, I'm surprised Shawnski hasn't dropped by, he's usually good for a condescending moral beatdown in a thread like this.

I don't take issue with the idea of having a couple pops before the game - but by their description a couple guys were ripped, and went out and got some pretty serious penalties.
I'm not judging the people - I don't know any of these guys at all so it's silly to make anything more out of this than what it was.
But I am judging the act - and the act was pretty moronic.

Are you talking about the act of being hammered during the game, or the act of the ref instances... or both?
I really need to reiterate that most of the team did what you don't have an issue with: having a few pops before the game.
A few were drunk, but didn't cause any more problems than accidentally lining up on the wrong side of the faceoff circle.
It seems everyone is denouncing the event for a few guys getting drunk then going and causing crap with the ref, when in actuality, it was a team having a few pops before the game, being responsible enough to secure a DD, having a good game, then a few of the sober guys got into a disagreement with the other team and it went from there.
I know everyone here is denouncing the aftermath of when he cancelled the game, but keep tying that with alcohol. Yes, what happened after was deplorable, but it didn't involve the drunkards.

I would say the drunkest guys were pretty responsible and generally had a good time. I had around 8 beers and 4 or 5 shots, so I was pretty drunk, but I hold my liquor exceptionally well, and was pretty responsible out there and didn't do anything stupid....I think..Jayems? Jar_e? I was pretty good eh?

Wow. Way to suck all of the fun out of this thread.
Guess what? Everyone is irresponsible every now and then. People make bad decisions every once in a while. I'm sure the finger-pointers out there have done stupid things too. No big deal. It happens.
In this case, hilarity ensued. In other cases tragedy ensues. Laugh when you can. The other option isnt nearly as much fun.
I think the righteousness needs to be toned down a little. Take it for what it is. They werent roasting puppies over an open fire or anything, they got a little blitzed before a rec game.

You mentioned something earlier about the refs not willing to open the doors of communication because a few players were drunk resulting in things escalating and a few players getting pretty angry. Sounds to me the drunks on the team had a hand in this matter.
Maybe if everyone was sober the refs would have communicated differently and things would not have gotten heated. That's my issue.

I think the only over-reaction is to the people reacting to those of us that think it was dumb. Ultimately I don't really care - but having a total of 13 drinks and playing hockey, and then being a part of a team that gets kicked out of a game for some sort of abuse on an official - is all kinds of dumb.
That's all we were saying. It was dumb. Funny? Probably. But dumb too. Lots of dumb.
I've played a lot of rec sports and these type of teams piss me off. If I was the other team i would have been pissed off, if I was the ref I would have been pissed off. And I also get the impression that in some ways the fingers are being pointed at the ref in this case. Which brings me back to a previous point - if you show up to a game drunk - you really have no leg to stand on. That's why you don't do that.
But since I'm neither I'm not. Just saying how I view the situation.

Yeah, but I'm just saying that they weren't involved in the hit or the match on an official. That's all.
