I say at a minimum you should always cover your tip out so I go 5% for bad service. I don't tip for the attractiveness of the server but will tip greatly for the friendlyness of a server. I also tip more if the kitchen is terrible and behind and the waiter/waitress is working really hard keeping everyone happy. I think that when a server is really busy and your individual service is suffering you shouldn't punish your server for bad scheduling by the restraunt so I give a little extra

I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant. There are many jobs that pay min. wage and the employees never once in their life receive a tip. In high school I worked pumping gas back in the full serve days and I received no tips at all (save x-mas) when you would get the odd loonie here and there. That's a crap job when you're in -25 weather with ice and wind beating off your face while you are doing things that a mechanic should be doing, especially when you aren't qualified lol.
I get in trouble from my fiance' and parents come to town because I tip too large. I only tip large if the service is good however. I still tip when the service stinks but I tip very little. As for the pizza making sidebar going on here...I never tip when picking up my pizzas. I believe that is their job is it not...to make the pizzas? I am not saying it isn't hard work but where does it end? Do you tip the guy/gal at Subway for making a sub? Wendy's for making me my spicy baconator? They too also have to make stuff/clean/handle cash.
I dunno, the whole issue is pretty well circumstantial for me.

All sorts of people work hard at their jobs without getting tips, its so arbitrary who gets tips and who doesnt, you tip some kid for driving you your pizza, why not tip all the construction workers who built your house? you're going to be using that house a lot longer than you will that pizza and they spent hours and hours building, that kid drove your pizza for 10 mins.

No offense to your idea of carpet installing being hard work, but there is no comparison to the challenge of dealing with the public. Hence why people in the service have their sense of entitlement.

Yeah no kidding.
The carpet your installing isn't going to complain to you that their food is wrong, too cold/hot, or be hit on by it, or have drinks spilled on you by it. Its never going hit on you, slap your ass, and make sexually disparaging remarks.
Its never going to make you take endless phone-calls while juggling hot oil, dough, vegetables and sauce. It isn't going to need to be done again when the driver is late or the customer bitches for free stuff because they got ranch dressing/dip instead of garlic or whatever.
Installing carpet will never require you to swallow your pride and smile at the most foul smelling, obnoxious creep of all time and act sweet. You will never have to dress like a whore to make any real money.
You will never have to clean up someone else's puke.
So...tip people in the service industry.

In all fairness, working the service industry also has its share of perks you won't get elsewhere.
I think the point is why do some jobs require us to pay above the asking price? And if so why is it just some service jobs and not others? Best example, most people tip the bartender at the Saddledome who poured your beer, but not the kid who grabbed your slice of pizza. Both cost $5.75- both are the same amount of work.
Why do we feel compelled to tip some people and not others? And I think the solution should be tips for nobody- have businesses start charging more to be able to pay for staff. Heck- put staff on comission. That way you can be sure the waitress won't be letting your beer run dry if she's getting a cut of the sales.

That's hilarious. Don't worry, I've done my share of working in the service industry. To even compare difficulty is embarrassing, really. But that really has nothing to do with my post.

Oh no, people bitching. They should be given a tip cause other people bitch to them.
What's next, tipping the guy at Blockbuster or at Safeway?

Nope. They just smoke pot all shift. Which is why you don't tip at 7-11 either. Or gas attendants unless its below freezing.
But people who are putting out a serious amount of energy to make sure you have a great night out deserve a tip above the standard fare.

you make some random assessments there, I've know people who work at pizza places too and some of them just get high in the back also, so I guess no one who works at a pizza place every does any real work either. case closed no tip for them
In fact I know of this certain pizza place where for an extra $10 bucks you get something extra..... oh crap they shut him down

Which Safeway do you go to?
People put in energy to make your Pizza are there because they get paid salary. Its pretty simple. habernac put it nicely, you pay $25 for a pizza or whatever. Lets say $5 for the ingrediants, $20 for someone making it for you and in their kitchen.
If thats not enough and it sucks, just get another job. I don't get what all the bitching is about. Isn't Safeway paying like $12 an hr these days?

You're right. The owner will, however, complain that the carpet was not installed correctly/on time/on budget. I was never hit on, at least. That's something, I suppose.

True enough, we don't work with a lot of grease. I do, however, have reduced mobility in my knees and shoulder. I will until the day I die. Climbing mountains will never be the same, as I can barely make it down a mountain anymore. Geez, I can't even go down stairs without a little pain. And as if the owner never asks for free stuff. Have you never worked in construction??

True. I did have to clean up my own blood numerous times. Off of brand new carpet. That worked well.

Every job sucks. And has its perks. How hard the job is has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not an employer should be allowed to sluff of the payment of their employees onto the customers.

The entire idea of tipping is dumb. Employers should pay employees the wages they deserve. The tip should be optional for those who go above and beyond and not a societal requirement.
They have the right idea in Europe. No tipping.

I was speaking in the specific case of the CPers son who works a pizza place by himself. That kid deserves a tip.
The rest of my longer post was in the context of the girls who work in my venue.

couldnt agree more with that statement, I'm not against tipping at all but it is supposed to reward good service not be forced upon you.

I have immeasurable respect for tradespeople. But I would never work a heavy trade. I have a friend who went into being an electrician simply to appease the father of his girl. This man has robo-cop knees and hasn't had a hard-on in 20 years. But swinging a hammer makes him a real man I guess, regardless of what it does to his body and then in turn marriage. Personally, I like my knees and my junk to work.

Try to be more careful. At least it was your own blood, or someone you knew/worked with.

Service industry jobs are some of the tiest jobs on earth. And unfortunately unlike Europe, tips are what make it work. Also, please remember that they are working hard for your total and immeadiate gratification.
