Once I saw a shooting star go up really fast at about a 60 deg angle

The comparison to flat earth is a comparison to clinging to what we know and not entertaining what is possible.
I'm not assuming that its impossible, just very unlikely by the sheer vastness of space, the amazing distances between galaxies and more importantly how up until this last 100yrs our planet would not have been a standout in any way.

But of course, I have a very open mind to the possibilities, I just hedge my bets on what I think based on astro physics and what I've learned about the universe.

We are all ultimately guessing at something we know nothing really about, since until we meet an alien race we cannot truly know anything. But its fun to think about

OK. As long as you're sure about that. I'm saying that there's no reason why they couldn't look quite similar and if they did, there;'s no reason why they couldn't assume a form that would reduce the shock.
True, just depends on how much they fear us and our unpredictable nature, as if they have been watching these last 100 yrs they would probably deal with us very carefully

Quote:
Well that's a nice theory, but if you look at our evolution you'll see that it hasn't come anywhere close to that. yet we have the capability to destroy ourselves and most of life on earth. And some would even have you believe that there are people out there trying to do just that.

So no, technological brilliance hasn't gotten us any nearer to (as JL put it) A Brotherhood of Man.
We are at a very young state in human development, I mean the start of the real human growth is only in the last 100yrs. It will be pretty amazing how much we advance in the next 100 years and when the nano age is in full swing it will make the computer age seem stone age-ish.

Its just a theory, I think the further we move away from mysticism and what our current planet is all about, more into science, logic, reason, etc.. The less reasons we have to kill each other and destroy this planet.

But of course as we advance we will learn new and exciting ways to destroy ourselves.

Meteors can seem to direction or look like they're going in odd directions.. the speeds and distances involved just don't fit into our brains well.

They can also change directions, if they split apart or skip off the denser portion of atmosphere if coming in at an oblique angle.

Wait - if it's tri-lateral wouldn't they be the odd-balls?

That was my first thought. Then I thought Socrates. Then I guessed Da Vinci. Da Vinci could kick Darwin's ass. Just like Spiderman could take Batman any day of the week.

The idea that another species of sentient life could evolve and rise up at the same time as us, in a different galaxy, seems highly improbable. Add to the fact that they would be at around the same level technologically as us stretches it to the impossible.

A theory I've heard is that these "aliens" are from the Earth. They developed self awareness long before us, and have had thousands of years to improve their technology, so much so that they can choose to be hidden from humans indefinitely. They are a different species altogether, but have reached sentience and see us as a mild curiosity, the way a person would pick up an insect to see how it behaves. Except they seem to like picking up farmers or lone drivers on highways, then anal probe them.

What if he had frickin sharks with laser beams on their heads?

Mind you Da Vinci would just invent something ala Mcgyver and kill him.

LOL! This thread is so old that I had to check to see if I actually wrote that. Poorly chosen words + out of context revival of post = FAIL

I don't think it's improbable at all given the sheer number of galaxies out there. There's what, 125 billion galaxies, and the universe is only 16 billion years old.

How many times might a galaxy produce sentient life in it's lifespan?
